Nurn (Nuhn)

Nurn is a World that is completely frozen over, creating a frigid environment. Because of this, all Nurnites wear suits that protect them from the extremely harsh environment that they live in. They have grown to become overly reliant on these suits, and are unable to live outside of one regardless of their environment. They are one of the three members of The Spider Alliance, though they seem to be the least active member within the alliance.   They are also seen as one of the most mysterious civilisations in The Pontision System, as very few envoys from the other Worlds have been permitted to step foot on Nurn. Even those that have been granted permission have had to take adequate precautions so that they don't freeze to death by constructing their own cold suits. However, in recent years some of these restrictions have been eased, mostly at the behest of Mundi. Nurnites tend to believe that they are the strongest and toughest civilisation in the entire galaxy, and promote such a strong image of individuality that many political commentators express their surprise that they ever agreed to an alliance with Malum Auctori and Donerth.   However, as some Nurnites have begun exploring the galaxy and witnessing other cultures and societies Nurn's superiority has been put into question. For potentially the first time in centuries, dissidence is brewing in Nurn.

Political and Social Customs

Nurn's populace is an innately hypocritical one. Nurnites love their World dearly and speak of it with ever-exceeding pride, yet they refuse to speak of their history or invite visitors to their home. Despite loving their home, Nurnites tend to have an anti-authoritarian streak regarding their elected officials. The members of the The Independent People's Democratic Union of the Grand Republic of Nurn are elected democratically, relying on the votes of the people to climb to political power. Many Nurnites refuse to vote for their officials in an act of rebellion against the IPDUGRN. However, while many Nurnites have many complaints about their leadership there are very few Nurnites that have actually left Nurn and sought life within foreign space.

Pre-Web History

View full timeline in: History of Nurn   Nurn is infamously one of the most secretive Worlds in the galaxy, as very little is known about them prior to the construction of The Web. Most of their history has been inferred based off of their actions and the current state of their World. Firstly, it is clear that Nurn has been at war before, either with another group of people or with themselves. This is based on the large amount of weaponry and armaments that they have, including their own line of mecha manufactured by Harrison Armoury. Further compounding this, the Nurnites' pride and love for their World is of such an intensity that it is hard to imagine that it came about without any direct competition to fan the flames of their fervour.   Secondly, it is widely theorised that Nurn was not always the icy wasteland that it currently is. As the Nurnites require temperature suits to survive their World's climate, they must have once existed in a time where these suits were not required. Thus, it stands to reason that the climate was once less hazardous than it currently is. Furthermore, since they must have had the suits prior to this climate shift it means that the Nurnites must have either a) been aware that these suits would be required in the future or b) already had need of such technology.   Third, it seems that something has occurred to make the Nurnites desensitised to violence. A lot of their entertainment is not for the faint of heart, and they have far from a peaceful culture. A prime example of this is the colosseum battles that are found in The Harrison Caps. Perhaps this is tied to the presumed warfare that they have endured in the past, or maybe it is what helped them survive it.

Post-Web History

When Nurn was first contacted by the Mundians, they were hesitant to interact and communicate. However, as the Auctori reached out to them Nurn became more talkative. Malum Auctori, Donerth, and Nurn became fast allies and began collaborating. Though no matter how much attention they received from the other Worlds or how much information was shared with them, Nurn would not relay their history to anyone.   Prior to the construction of The Web, Malum Auctori asked Nurn to begin communicating with Otiosus. The Auctori believed that Nurnites might be able to survive in areas with large levels of nuclear radiation thanks to the protection of their suits, and encouraged them to discuss plans for a new settlement on Otiosus. Reluctantly, Nurn began to do so.   Ever since their entrance into galactic space the Nurnites have been reserved at best and aggressive at worst. The vast majority of aliens that wished to visit Nurn have been turned away, and those select few with permission to land had to construct their own temperature suits. While many restrictions regarding who could and could not land on Nurn have been eased, no additional aid has been offered to alleviate the dangers of their World. The only major political actions taken by Nurn have been their involvement in the official declaration of The Spider Alliance, and their construction of their colony on Otiosus: New Atria.   With the rise in tension across the galaxy, Nurn's military might has seen significant growth in preparation for war. While much is still a mystery in regard to Nurn, one thing is certain; you don't want them as an enemy.

Species and Geography

Even the Nurnites' anatomy is shrouded in mystery. They are a four-limbed, bipedal species, and are believed to have a humanoid stature as shared by the majority of sapient species within The Ponitision System. Further, they are believed to be mammalian, as female Nurnites produce milk and there is no record of a Nurnite laying eggs. Nurnites also have a very weak immune system and are entirely reliant on their temperature suits to keep themselves safe from harm.   The suits themselves are extremely well designed, and are crafted with a level of care that often eludes the Nurnites. They are given to children at birth and are designed to be modular enough that the suit can essentially grow with a Nurnite. One could liken their suits to a spacefaring vessel; if damage is dealt to one area of the suit there are internal seals that will activate to ensure that any damage or infection does not spread to the rest of the body. The material of the suits protects from: harsh temperatures (both hot and cold), the vacuum of space, and radiation. There are stories of Nurnites sleeping in the midst of snow storms and waking up the next day with no lingering issues. Suits also have the equivalent of docking ports that can connect male and female suits for the purpose of mating. Many Nurnites go their entire lives without ever seeing their reflection.   Nurn itself is a wild and untamed, frigid wasteland. The land is swarmed with ice storms and thunderous weather, and despite the harsh weather that the Nurnites experience their settlements are said to be located in the least hazardous areas in Nurn. Nurn is also inhabited by massive creatures that live in the snow and the cold, though no physical descriptions have been given for any of these beasts. It is said that when a storm picks up and the winds are howling as loud as the engines of a rocket ship, not a single Nurnite knows whether it is just the sound of a hurricane or if it is the creatures that live beyond their walls.

Settlements

There are four major settlements that exist on Nurn. They are all ruled by the Nurnite government: The Independant Peoples' Democratic Union of the Grand Republic of Nurn (or IPDUGRN). While they do rule these sectors, the IPDUGRN seem to have very little authority over their denizens. According to their latest census data there are roughly one hundred million Nurnites, however it should be noted that there are many Nurnites that don't believe in filling out government forms.

Atria

Atria is the capital of Nurn and has the largest population of all the settlements in Nurn. Out of all of the settlements on Nurn it has the highest level of government presence and oversight. The city's layout is structured in a series of three ring-like formations: the central city, the border, and the outskirts. Atria's central city landscape has the grandest buildings and spires in all of Nurn, and is where the wealthiest and most powerful Nurnites live. The border hosts the second largest military presence and the single greatest level of mech manufacturing in Nurn, and is so densely packed with factory buildings and military outposts that it completely separates the central city and the outskirts. Crime is at an alltime high in the outskirts, the major residential area of Atria for lower-middle class and working class Nurnites. In total, there are believed to be 45 million Nurnites living in Atria.

Freezing Fog City

Freezing Fog City is the sister city to Atria, and is second to them in almost every way. FFC is infamous within Nurn for their desire to be greater than Atria, but has only ever exceeded their poverty and incarceration rates. The population of FFC barely exceeds 25 million Nurnites, and it is estimated that over 10% of FFC's population is currently imprisoned and an additional 17% have previously served serious jail time. Freezing Fog City faces a population crisis and the city's urban sprawl is consuming what little farmland the city has access to. Worryingly, as the city's name would suggest, their climate is the harshest out of all of Nurn's settlements. This dangerous weather threatens to send FFC into a famine, and if proper shelters are not constructed as the city expands there could soon be thousands, if not millions, of deaths. It makes one wonder why anybody would ever think to construct a settlement here.

The Harrison Caps

The Harrison Caps is the central hub of entertainment in Nurn. It is built on the side of a massive ice cap and is a frequent vacation destination for Nurnites, though it is not for the faint of heart. The city is filled to the brim with casinos, markets, brothels, and raceways. Cappers, as the residents call themselves, pride themselves on their racing to such an extent that once a quarter the entire city participates in a demolition derby that runs through all the streets of The Harrison Caps. This has ruined the streets of the city and has killed countless Nurnites, yet the tradition lives on. Because of these races and frequent tourists, the population fluctuates between 10 and 15 million Nurnites.

Barren Stand Regiment

Nurn's largest military outpost, Barren Stand Regiment, stands in isolation on Nurn's surface. It is the largest known military structure within the Pontision System, to the point that it is considered a city by the Nurnites. Residents of Barren Stand are required to remain within the confines of the outpost for a minimum of fifteen years upon arrival. Despite being given permission to leave after those fifteen years many residents choose to remain in Barren Stand, many even starting families and raising children within the outpost. The majority of new Nurnite technology is developed within this outpost.
