Otiosus (Ott-ee-o-suss)
Otiosus is a World that prides itself on its lack of hostility in an increasingly aggressive galaxy. It has a long-standing history of violence and war waged against its own people. This led to the near-extinction of their race and all organic life on their World. From the embers of their people came a radical group of Otions that spread a message of peace and passivity. By the time they started communication with the other Worlds, they had been at peace for two decades.
After The Web was constructed the Otions gladly accepted people of all Worlds into their World, and they host the largest and oldest interworld colony. Nurn occupies this colony, as they are one of the few people who can survive on Otiosus for extended periods of time (due to their temperature suits). Their colony was set up and co-ordinated by Malum Auctori. They have a large mining operation set up on the planet to harvest a resource called Venomorte.
Political and Social Customs
While their ancestors were ruthless and bloodthirsty, modern day Otions follow a strict doctrine of pacifism. They believe that all tension and conflict can be resolved through peaceful dialect, and that violence is an immoral act. This belief was spearheaded by the Iodiwas Concord and is now fully ingrained into Otion society. This endeared them heavily to the Mundian's emphasis on open-mindedness and their open invitation to every World to participate in friendly, ideological debate. When interacting with foreign bodies, Otiosus tends to be kind toward others and never turns down the opportunity to engage and communicate with their galactic neighbours. Otiosus has traded Venomorte with almost every World, with the only exceptions being Yilvyke and Sani'Tatem, due to this ethos.Pre-Web History
View full timeline in: History of Otiosus Not much is known about the history of Otiosus prior to the planet becoming a nuclear wasteland. According to Otion history, the Otions were constantly engulfed by war for upwards of a millennia until The Iodiwas Concord came to power and prominence. Centuries of warfare were waged until the various nations and factions of Otiosus destroyed the planet's surface and rendered much of the World inhospitable. The environment became toxic to the Otions and mutated creatures dominate the vast landscape. It is estimated that prior to this era of war, Otiosus' population oscillated between 19 and 21 billion Otions. One thing that is known is that a lot of the conflict centred around a resource known as Venomorte. Venomorte is a naturally produced, nonrenewable mineral that is found underneath Otiosus' soil. This resource was vital to pre-nuclear fallout Otiosus as it was the single source of energy that the Otions chose to use. It is said that when the Otions first discovered Venomorte it was as abundant as the number of birds in the sky. Venomorte powered everything in Otiosus, and still does, from household appliances to weapons of war. Moreover, only a small amount of Venomorte was necessary to power their technology; just a piece of it the size of 9mm3 could power a ranged weapon for 12 armed conflicts. Out of the rubble, rose the Iodiwas Concord. They recognised that the perpetual warring of their ancestors is what led to the destruction of their home and preached a doctrine of peace and love. They began in the city of Cerul, and quickly began to spread their ideology to their neighbouring city Zephybury. Unfortunately, many Otions still clung to their vicious ways so the members of the Concord had to dispose of them. Once they incorporated a great number of Otions into their ranks and began construction of a colony on their closest moon, Ostea. For the next two decades the Concord tried to ration their resources to survive, but were quickly running out. They knew that they would only survive if they could make the Ostea colony functional, but were scared that they wouldn't be able to last long enough to inhabit the colony if they expended the resources necessary to move. The Otions only saving grace was that Venomorte had become easier to mine post-nuclear fallout for some reason. Despite this, the leaders of the Concord believed that their species would die in obscurity until they received a message from a distant World.Post-Web History
The Concord received communications from Mundi and realised that they weren't alone in the universe. They told them about their dire situation and requested aid from them. The Mundians began designing vehicles for long distance space travel and equipped them with the resources Otiosus desperately needed. Due to their intervention and the knowledge that they only had to hold on for a few decades, the Otions were able to survive total societal collapse. It was the plight of the Otions that spurred Mundi to begin constructing The Web with the Auctori. After Malum Auctori heard about the reports of Otiosus, they sent a message to Nurn and requested that they prepare to send a small contingent of Nurnites to one of the inhospitable continents of Otiosus and build a settlement there. They believed that the suits worn by the Nurnites would protect them from the nuclear fallout, and so Nurn began planning to build New Atria. The news of this settlement eventually found its way back to Mundi, and they began to grow concerned that the Otions had not been consulted about this new settlement. However, when they went to inform Otiosus about these plans they didn't mind in the slightest. So long as the Nurnites remained peaceful toward the Otions, they openly welcomed their alien neighbours into their home. Otiosus and Nurn began communicating directly with each other, as they learnt that they were spatially close enough to do so. The Concord tried to collaborate with Nurn on multiple subjects, but Nurn would only reply to discussions surrounding their future colony. When The Web was eventually constructed and the nodes between Nurn and Otiosus were complete the Nurnites began the construction of their colony. The Web also facilitated faster trade routes between the Worlds, meaning that Mundi could send more frequent and immediate aid to the Otions. However, Mundi began to feel that they had given too much charity to the Otions and told them that they would be withdrawing much of their aid unless Otiosus is able to give back to them. As Otiosus had narrowly avoided its death, the Concord agreed to trade Venomorte in exchange for the other Worlds' assistance. Through this trade Venomorte was introduced to the galaxy and became the single most precious material, with all forces in the Pontision System vying for Otiosus' favour and importing vast quantities of Venomorte. For the first time in its existence the Iodiwas Concord flourished. The Ostea Colony has been built and is a safe haven for the Otions and for the first time in over a century their species has been allowed to heal.Species and Geography
The Otions are a species with a segmented exoskeleton evocative of insectoids. They have eight limbs: four crab-like legs and four thin, delicate-looking arms. They have large, bulbous torsos with a long, curved neck. The most prominent features on their face are their large bulbous eyes and short mandibles. It is thanks to their exoskeleton and build that allowed them to survive the initial impacts of the nuclear fallout. The Otions are an agender species who reproduce asexually, though over time their ability to reproduce has diminished greatly. Their current population stands at just under 9 million Otions. The five continents in Otiosus are Ecora, Chasux, Burath, Egax, and Uawira. Cerul and Zephybury are both located on the continent of Ecora, and New Atria is on Egax. No other continent is currently inhabited by sapient beings due to the toxic environment that enveloped the World after Otiosus' era of war. Most of Otiosus is enveloped in firestorms, nuclear winters, or populated entirely by mutated monstrosities. Further, the majority of land became infertile, reducing the amount of produce that could be cultivated. It is believed that the Otions that weren't killed by the initial nuclear blasts starved after agricultural production was disrupted. Out of all of these continents the one with the least radiation damage is Ecora, which is why it is the only one inhabited by Otions. Egax is heavily radiated, but thanks to the Nurnite temperature suits they're able to survive there. Egax is consumed in an eternal nuclear winter, though this was something that the Nurnites easily adapted to. The others remain devoid of sapient creatures.Settlements
Cerul
Cerul is the largest city in Otiosus and is the birthplace of the Iodiwas Concord. It currently houses 5.8 million Otions amidst the rubble of what once was a great city. History tells that Cerul was once the capital of a country known as Abrurg, though that name is not used anymore. It is the primary manufacturer of goods and services in Otiosus and often has to trade its produce with Zephybury and the Ostea colony to keep them both afloat. Thanks to aid from foreign Worlds Cerul has also begun to experience a minor boom in the arts.Zephybury
Zephybury is the second largest settlement on Otiosus, containing 2.2 million Otions. In recent years, more and more Otions have been migrating from Cerul to Zephybury, and many believe that its population will exceed 3 million within a decade. Its primary export is Venomorte as it was the site of the largest Venomorte mine in Ecora prior to the near extinction of the Otions. It is in large thanks to this mine that Otiosus is able to participate in galactic politics with a position of power, to the extent that many galactic powers believe the Otions to be overly reliant on this mine. It is theorised that if the mine was to ever slow production it could spell the end of Otion society.Ostea colony
Construction of the Ostea colony began three decades ago and has been fully operational for almost two decades now. The population of this colony falls just shy of one million Otions. Thanks to the aid of alien Worlds, Ostea has become almost fully self-sufficient with the only resource that they need to import is purified water. The residents are still undecided on a name for the colony, so it is simply known as the Ostea colony (named after the moon it is built on). Some claim that there are plans for the Otions to begin construction on a second Ostea colony in the near future.New Atria
The Nurnite colony on Otiosus: New Atria, is the oldest interworld colony in the Pontision System. While many other Worlds hosted embassies prior to the construction of New Atria, this was the first true settlement to be built on a foreign World. New Atria is the only settlement located on Egax, as no one else other than the Nurnites could survive on it. This also means that they operate with very little to no oversight from the Otions, who are only aware of the activities and operations of New Atria thanks to New Atrian reports that are sent to them quarterly. New Atria has a population of 1.5 million Nurnites, which has remained steady for the past two decades.Map
