Chatibos (Kat-ee-bo-ss)
Chatibos is the most underdeveloped World within the galaxy. It was still in its early industrial era when Mundi reached out to them. Through this communication with the alien planet whose technology far surpassed their own, Chatibos was able to advance into a space-faring civilisation within a few decades, where it would normally take a handful of centuries.
Until the communication with Mundi and the construction of The Web, Chatibos was seen to be on a natural path of development. However, once it began to interact with the other Worlds its maturity is believed to have been stunted in favour of becoming a true galactic power. Now, the merchants and traders rule Chatibos. The various corporations that were brought to power after Mundi's interference have begun trading weapons of war to both The Spider Alliance and to Telea, reducing Chatibos to a glorified weapons factory.
Political and Social Customs
Chatibos is potentially the most multicultural and diverse planet in the Pontision System, whose values differ greatly from region to region. This is not only due to the immense diversity of the original Chatibosans from The Arc but also because of the separate nations that were built in opposition to one another. However, all the nations of Chatibos are built on the same foundational principles, chiefly amongst them being individuality. This World holds people who can look out for themselves and act independently of their surroundings in high regard, often shunning those who find themselves unable to keep up with the daily demands of life. This works hand in hand with a political and economic system that assesses one's merit based on their personal productivity and the degree of difficulty one's work entails. Essentially, Chatibos purports that the amount of effort and energy an individual invests into a given aspect of life will be rewarded in proportion to their efforts, ultimately leading to the conclusion that those who struggle in life simply do not try hard enough to achieve greatness. However, with the rise of technology and the sharpening of Chatibos’ political and economic systems there has come the rise of something almost antithetical to Chatibosan life: art. The quality of Chatibosan theatre and film coming from Tyche has never been higher. The wealthy citizens of Arcadia, Toppinggarde, Jupiter’s Point, and Oplaria have been commissioning architects and traditional artists to bring more beauty into their homes and their cities. Further, many of the younger members of Chatibos have been learning about and practising within these creative fields at a rate unprecedented to Chatibos. The reinvigoration of the arts seen in modern Chatibos may indicate a more vibrant future for the young World. The values that are more highly emphasised by Morea, Oplaria, Hoplye, Efron, and Oskait are as follows:Morea
Morea's ethos is that of a futurist. Morean culture appreciates those who seek to innovate upon current systems and technology, so long as it supports Morea's goals. They envision a utopian society and aspire to be the best nation in Chatibos, with many Moreans believing that they already are. They consider themselves visionaries, and are the most politically proactive nation regarding intergalactic relations.Oplaria
Oplaria is potentially the nation least interested in intergalactic politics with the exception of an interest in increasing alien tourism. They only believe in the continued accumulation of wealth, and some have even come to call their methods exploitative. However, this mentality has proven to be effective. Despite their capital city imploding less than two centuries ago, Oplaria has become the wealthiest nation in all of Chatibos within the past two decades. Oplaria parades this title around for all to see, though economists believe that they may not be able to retain it in the coming days.Hoplye
The Hoplian government is currently close partners with the Morean government, though some might say that Hoplye is simply an extension of Morea at this point. The Hoplians have been seen to send many of their resources to Morea at Morea's request in return for far less than the value of what they send. This is not a courtesy that they extend to any other nation, and has received claims of price gouging in relation to their trade rates with Oplaria, Efron, and particularly Oskait. The reason for Hoplye's seeming favouritism toward Morea is unknown to the public.Efron
Efron takes the ideals of Chatibos and inflates them to a level nearing the absurd. The Efronian Government is almost entirely composed of high-ranking members of the corporations that lead the Corporate Conclave. The Conclave uses this influence to expand their efforts and hone their effectiveness as businesses within the capital of Efron: Toppinggarde. On the other hand, the Conclave is able to impose greater and more daunting restrictions on their working class than any other nation in Chatibos. They buffer the severity and gravity of their legalese via their emphasis of the integration of work lives and private lives. By encouraging workers to live at their work and normalising the fusion of these usually separate worlds, Efron is able to enact further grand changes to workers' lives because they are already complacent with their lives being interfered with. Only those at the top of the corporate hierarchy are permitted to live outside of their workplaces.Oskait
Many of Oskait's political actions can be traced back to their rivalry with Morea. It is no secret that the Oskaitan government has been extremely envious of the Moreans for their abundant amount of success in recent years, both economically and politically. They attempt to outshine Morea in everything that they do, even going so far as to replicate their nation's settlement structure. It is believed that the technological and architectural feat that is Jupiter's Point was only able to be achieved because the Oskaitans' spite would fuel them even when all hope seemed lost.Pre-Web History
View full timeline in: History of Chatibos Chatibosan history starts with The Arc. Many years ago a spaceship known as The Arc landed on the surface of Chatibos with 500,000 cryogenically frozen Chatibosans. Upon the completion of The Arc's landing procedures the cryo-pods that the Chatibosans were held in began to defrost and within a matter of hours all 500,000 passengers were up and walking about the ship. These passengers were composed of a diverse mix of different genders, races, cultures, and ages; however, the presumed years of cryo-freeze had altered their brains and impaired their memories of where they had come from. The adults had vague memories of their past, but the elderly and the children were blank slates. They discovered from their ship's autopilot, named Chatibos, that it was tasked with finding a hospitable planet for them to live on. All they knew was that they needed to investigate their surroundings. The Chatibosans quickly spread out to encompass the entirety of the planet. Using the little knowledge that they had from their previous lives the Chatibosans began to develop the basics of a society, building a basic governing force that operated within a capitalistic system. They would name themselves after their ship's autopilot as a sign of respect and thanks for transporting them to safety. As they spread further and further away from The Arc, they began to split from the original government and build their own civilisations. However, the internal structure of these newer societies would remain relatively unchanged from their predecessors. Chatibosan technology, much like their society, had to start by and large from scratch. They had The Arc as a reference point for advanced technology, but had no real knowledge of how to achieve that standard of craftsmanship. Any attempts to reverse engineer the machinery used in The Arc were waylaid due to thievery and the need to use various external parts (such as the ship's frame) for shelter. Due to this interference very little progress could be made in this area and many Chatibosans were thrust into the position of scientist or engineer. Within merely a century and a half of settling the World, the Chatibosans would find themselves flung into a planet-wide industrial revolution. For the next 500 years, the Chatibosans would commit themselves to developing their society, though this would come at the expense of the poorer residents. The various Chatibosan civilisations all valued accumulating capital and would place a heavy emphasis on the production of commodities and price mechanism. This would also see the rise of large corporations and would lead to what is now known as the Corporate Conclave, a society in which the CEOs and Chairmen of high profile businesses would convene. However, the financial efficiency employed by the growing corporations of Chatibos began to exhibit a severe Chatibosan cost. As the cost of living within major cities increased and wages remained stagnant, the poorer residents of Chatibos were forced to either work longer and more gruelling hours or find themselves without a place to call home. The ever-decreasing quality of life within the major settlements of the planet led to radical protests that violently targeted large warehouses and factories that were the most notorious in their mistreatment of their workers. Originally, the corporations sought to quell the protests by enacting harsher restrictions on their subjects, however this only saw an increase in terrorist activity. In response they sought to placate the masses by adhering to a number of their demands and compromising on the others. With these new policies in place Chatibos was able to resume its regular rate of production, and these conditions have been sustained well into the modern day. Yet, it must be noted that most other Worlds in the galaxy would likely claim that these working conditions are still overly demanding of their workers. With a new status quo in place the power of the Corporate Conclave would grow to new heights, though the number of members began to shrink. As various corporations around the World accumulated power and wealth they would often induct and incorporate their rivals via mergers or simply run them out of business. There are even records of these corporations going to war with one another, a prime example being 'The Civil War in Dime City'. This is most telling when comparing the number of members that formed the Corporate Conclave (forty-six) to that of its current membership (seven). They grew to such an extent that they began to overpower the existing governments of Chatibos, and it became well known to all Chatibosans that leaders of the five nations of Chatibos were all puppets and figureheads of the corporations.Post-Web History
One day the Arc's radio transmitter, one of the few remaining operational pieces from The Arc, began to receive a message from coordinates that were not of Chatibosan origin. At this point in time the transmitter was in an Arcadian museum that was owned by Utopian Industries (UI) and their top scientists and linguists began working on decoding the message. Eventually, they were able to understand that it was an alien message asking all sentient life in its vicinity whether or not they wished to join their galactic society. UI began to communicate back to the Mundians (the ones who sent out the message) through the transmitter, working to understand each other's languages. In their talks with the Mundians, the Chatibosans had to explain that they did not have the technological advancements to be able to travel through The Web and participate within Pontision society. After admitting that the only reason they received Mundi's signal was because their people used to be capable of these scientific wonders, the Mundians vowed to assist Chatibos in joining them and the other seven Worlds in The Web. They began by sharing their knowledge with Chatibos and also began designing spaceships that could traverse between solar systems. The Chatibosans developed this new technology at an extremely rapid pace, beginning what is now referred to as Chatibos' neo-industrial revolution. Prior to Mundi's arrival on Chatibos, Utopian Industries had a clear technological and scientific edge on the rest of the Corporate Conclave, quickly becoming the most profitable business model in Chatibos, which was sustained for three decades straight. The knowledge that the Mundians imparted on them not only gave them access to new, cutting edge tech, but it also assisted in increasing the efficacy of their output of goods. This, in turn, would also make Morea the most successful and powerful nation in Chatibos, accolades it held up until recently. In a mad scramble to catch up to UI's unprecedented escalation in income the other six members of the Conclave were found: stealing from, spying on, and cheaply replicating Utopian Industries. These actions very nearly caused a war between the Conclave members, were it not for further Mundian intervention. Mundi demanded that their knowledge be shared amongst all Chatibosans, and UI relented to this order. In the following years Chatibos would become a major political and economic power within the galaxy. Despite their youth, the Chatibosans had a business sense beyond measure and began establishing contacts in every World across the galaxy. They began trading with any power they could, seemingly determined to find a use for every substance that was alien and unknown to them. They took specific interest in Otiosus' Venomorte, as well as assisting in amplifying the already increasing arms production for both the Teleans and the Auctori. The only World that Chatibos has ever struggled to gain a significant foothold in has been Sani'Tatem, as the Sani'Tonians appear to not need nor want outside assistance in running their World.Species and Geography
Chatibosans are a four-limbed, bipedal, mammalian species. In terms of height, most Chatibosans stand between five and six ft. tall once they have reached maturity. They have fleshy exteriors of various shapes, sizes and shades; with patches of hair that begins to grow across the body more and more as they age and reach adulthood. The singular exception to this is the thick patch of hair that grows atop their scalps, a highly treasured feature that is uniquely styled between every Chatibosan. On their face they have two forward facing eyes that rest above a rounded, protruding nose. Just below the nose is their mouth and at nose level (on the left and right sides of the skull) are two fleshy ears. Whilst they are not a sturdy creature, they are highly adaptable and are well suited for many different conditions of the galaxy. Chatibos is one of the most diverse landscapes in the Pontision System, somewhat reminiscent of Telean and Mundian environments, but whose biodiversity exists on a far smaller scale. Throughout the planet there exists various: lush forests, vast deserts, deep oceans, and plentiful grasslands. Chatibos has six continents: Eyand, Umuan, Vipos, Grafela, Nivrish, and Siowira. However, Nivrish and Siowira are uninhabited as Nivrish is a frigid environment and Siowira is a continent purely used to mine resources by the Corporate Conclave. It is widely believed that the planet that the Chatibosans originally came from had similar conditions due to how quickly the Chatibosans adapted to the World upon arrival.Settlements
Chatibos is comprised of five separate nations, making it the only World that is not governed by one singular force (other than Yilvyke, a World that does not have any governing force). These nations are: Morea, Oplaria, Hoplye, Efron, and Oskait. Morea occupies the majority of Eyand, Oplaria is partially situated both in Eyand and Umuan, Hoplye occupies the remainder of Umuam, Efron exists in Vipos and Oskait has settled Grafela. In their totality, the Chatibosan population comes to a little over one hundred million residents. The following are the major settlements that fall into each of these five forces.Arcadia
Arcadia is a Morean city and the original landing site of The Arc. The citizens of this city came to believe that they had been sent to Chatibos because their old World had suffered a horrendous downfall, and strove to make their current World a paradise. Arcadia was the first settlement ever constructed in Chatibos, and was originally composed solely of The Arc. However, as the years passed by more homes and buildings were erected outside of the massive ship, with many of these settlements requiring materials from The Arc to be built. Because of this The Arc has been reduced to the size of a large building that now hosts conferences held by the Morean parliament. Arcadia is also the home of Utopian Industries, and when UI began communicating with Mundi it in turn empowered Arcadia. Thus, this city is seen to be representative of all of Chatibos to the other galactic powers in The Web, and the majority of intergalactic politicians originate from Arcadia. Arcadia is the largest city in Chatibos, with a population of 22 million Arcadians.Nethermire
Nethermire is Arcadia's sister city, and largely exists to support Arcadia's growing power and influence. It is host to a large number of factories that are predominantly the property of Utopian Industries, with a (comparatively speaking) small number of Entelligence and Advanced Arts workshops present as well. The residential areas within Nethermine are far smaller and more condensed than the production areas, meaning many of the factories are found to hire Arcadian workers who are in need of a job or extra work. Naturally, this means that there are also a large number of employees in Nethermire that are without shelter. The city contains 6 million Netherites, and employs roughly 2 million Arcadians. It is thanks to Nethermire's emphasis on factory life that Arcadia can aspire to become a true utopia, though many of the workers in Nethermire have begun to make it clear that they are dissatisfied with this arrangement.Tyche
Considered the entertainment district of Chatibos, Tyche is an Oplarian city that seeks to bring joy and recreational fun to people of all ages and walks of life. Therefore, it goes without saying that Karmic Applications has the strongest foothold in this city. At the heart of Tyche is the Karmic Leisure Centre, a region of the city that is packed to the brim with gambling halls and other entertainment venues. This makes it a hotspot for tourist activity, bringing in Chatibosans from all over the planet. However, there are plenty of Tychien residents that frequent this area as well, with many making the Leisure Centre their home. Due to the high fluctuations in Tyche's population an exact count of their population cannot be accurately determined, but they rest at an average of 4.5 million Chatibosans.Neo Dime City
Neo Dime City is the capital of Oplaria and is the most modern city in Chatibos. It derives its name from Dime City, the previous capital of Oplaria that was reduced to ruins during a civil war that was waged between Advanced Arts and a now bankrupt corporation prior to Chatibos' first contact with Mundi. These two corporations had both deeply invested in the development and selling of weapons of war and had developed an intense rivalry. Both had their headquarters in Dime City, and their close proximity to one another would generate a severe amount of friction. This would eventually result in catastrophe, in which the two corporations launched into an all-out war, with Dime City as the battlefield. Advanced Arts came out as the victor, but Dime City was no more and their enemy had been sundered into obscurity. From the ashes Neo Dime City rose and was built to be grander and more impressive than ever before, only further enhanced by the knowledge imparted on them by the wider galaxy. Now, 16 million Dimes call the city home.Bellport
The smallest city in Oplaria; Bellport is notorious for its beautiful scenery and hospitality, making it a frequent tourist destination for Chatibosans. This city is often used by Karmic Applications in their film-making. They pride themselves on their pastoral landscapes and simple living, going as far as to offer tours of their lifestyles for a nominal fee. The Small Businesses Conglomerate has Bellport as their biggest moneymaker, as they thrive off of the small, local businesses that they've incorporated into their business model. 1.5 million Porters reside in Bellport, but there seems to be a movement within Bellport and the Small Businesses Conglomerate to expand the city and open new Bellports on the other Worlds of The Web.Skuttlebarrow
Skuttlebarrow is a Hoplian city that has a monopoly on the accruement of fundamental resources within Chatibos and has pioneered Chatibosan asteroid mining. This city is home to almost 7 million Chatibosans, and it is said almost half of these residents suffer from respiratory illnesses. The Skuttlers have been stripping Siowira of its minerals for many years (and more recently Umuan) and have worked alongside Dynamico, Entelligence and Utopian Industries to seek out valuable assets among the stars. This has produced an exponential increase in goods and an abundance of wealth for all parties involved. It is also heavily believed that Advanced Arts receives a great sum of supplies from this venture, who then go on to transform these items into their own products that are bought by the wider galactic ecosystem. It is important to note that Chatibosans were not the first species to conduct mining projects on nearby asteroids, moons or planets (Mundians, Auctori, Sani'Tonians, and Otions all have as well), however they have been the most aggressive in doing so and their efforts have borne the most fruit when considering their limited timeframe.Creation Haven
Creation Haven is a massive manufacturing port in Efron, and is widely considered to be one of the cities with the highest population density in all of the galaxy. This city is capable of producing a near absurd amount of consumer goods, and every single member of the Corporate Conclave utilises Creation Haven's level of output to its maximum efficiency. Similar to Nethermire and Prongward, Creation Haven is a truly massive complex of factories and warehouses, however it differs by having zero designated residential areas. Instead, Creation Haven houses their workers within their job sites to reduce the issues of homelessness that are faced by cities with a similar structure. Were it not for this structure, the 18 million Creators that live in this city would not be able to safely call this city a home. Due to these conditions, the residents of Creation Haven have a strong communal bond with one another, often referring to the members of singular workplaces as a "family" of employees.Toppinggarde
The corporate hub of Chatibos, Toppinggarde is the home of the Corporate Conclave. It is located in Efron and is in many ways the polar opposite of Creation Haven. Almost the entirety of this city's population of 9 million fits into a position within the upper levels of the corporate hierarchies of the various members of the Corporate Conclave. Toppinggarde emphasises a "survival of the fittest" mentality, encouraging employees to rise the ranks of their respective company or corporation regardless of the cost to oneself or to others. Nothing is more highly coveted than a seat at the Conclave, and the Toppers have proven themselves willing to lie, cheat, scam, steal and even kill to reach such a position. These people can be powerful allies, but are notorious for always looking out for themselves and their careers at the expense of all else.Jupiter's Point
A flying city that rests above Oskait, Jupiter's Point is a monument to Chatibos' recent technological strides and advancements. This city uses the same technology that space-faring vessels use to hover within a planet's atmosphere to remain aloft. It was originally constructed in a joint effort between Prongward and Utopian Industries. This city is home to 4 million of the wealthiest Chatibosans in the World, and has recently begun advertising itself to the elite of the other Worlds. It is not public knowledge as to how expensive it is for Jupiter's Point to sustain itself, though based on what is known of the city it is undoubtedly extremely costly. There are various elevators that are connected between Jupiter's Point and Prongward that are used to transport visitors to and from the city.Prongward
Prongward is the Oskaitan city that lies underneath Jupiter's Point, delivering the resources necessary to keep it afloat. It was once the capital of Oskait, but after Jupiter's Point was constructed it lost that title. There is always a shadow cast on Prongward from the city that flies above it, though the shaded patch largely depends on Jupiter's Points position in the sky and the time of day. The lack of sunlight has devastated the farmlands surrounding Prongward, so they have all been transformed into landing ports for those travelling to either Prongward or Jupiter's Point. The majority of Prongward is composed of various warehouses and factory buildings with residential areas densely packed between them. There is also an expanding community in the slums of Prongward, bringing with it an increase in crime, disease and social discontent. Concerns are brewing within the upper echelons of Oskait that the workers of Prongward may reinvigorate the violence of the protests from Chatibos' first industrial revolution. With a population of almost 12 million, such a development could spell disaster for Prongward and Jupiter's Point.Avaritia
Malum Auctori's colony on Chatibos, and the most recent colony constructed within the Pontision System. They are situated in the continent of Vipos within the borders of Efron. Avaritia has strengthened the trade and economic bonds between the Auctori and the Corporate Conclave, however, some of the other countries (such as Morea and Oplaria) in Chatibos have expressed some minor displeasure with the Auctori’s affinity toward Efron. Because of this, it is believed that the Auctori plan to begin the construction of more colonies in Chatibosan territory.Important Figures
