L.A.N.C.E.R. Initiative
The L.A.N.C.E.R. (League of Adventuring Newcomers as Coordinated Emergency Responders) Initiative is the program that pilots (players) will be a part of for the bulk of the campaign, if not its entirety. It is run by the Mundians, specifically General Massive Systems (GMS), and aims to bring Malum Auctori, Nurn, Sani'Tatem and Telea closer together by having their respective mecha manufacturing organisations participate in a galactic peacekeeping effort. The program allows skilled pilots to access gear from IPS-N, SSC, HORUS, and HA as a reward for completing various tasks. It also grants the full complement of GMS weaponry and systems upon signing up for the initiative, however to sign up there is a preliminary exam that all pilots must undergo.
The pilots that pass this exam are known as Lancers, and often travel in teams of 3-6. These Lancers begin their career with zero licences and only have access to GMS systems, and must complete public tasks to earn licences from the other manufacturers if they wish to hone their gear and their craft. Public tasks are requests posted on GMS forums by clients who need assistance with an issue that they believe could only be surmounted by a Lancer. Clients can range anywhere from a captain whose vessel has been attacked and is adrift in space, to law enforcement agencies who are dealing with a case too dangerous for them to handle, to the owner of an off-world settlement whose habitat dome is failing and whose residents need emergency evacuation. These public tasks are given a danger rating, and are only available to certain pilots, depending on their ranking.
Lancer pilots all have five rankings within the initiative: an IPS-N rank, an SSC rank, a HORUS rank, a HA rank, and an overall rank. The manufacturer ranks refer to the favour gained from said manufacturers, either from purchasing licence from them or by completing tasks specific to those manufacturers. The higher a pilot’s favour with one of these manufacturers, the easier it may be to rely on them for extra resources and the more noticeable a pilot will be to their allies and their enemies. Those who hold the top 50 positions with a given manufacturer tend to become direct spokespersons for these companies, and are often given the highest of luxuries. A pilot’s overall rank is purely determined by the deeds they accomplish as a part of the initiative. Those with high ranks are often scouted by high-profile clients and asked to complete private task.
A pilot's Licence Level and Overall Rank tend to correlate as follows:
