Ebonwood Forest

The Ebonwood forest to the south of Savant's Prospect is an ancient forest that has been cultivated by the hands of the mysterious satyr for many thousands of years, long untouched by almost all mortal races. Its vast, primal wilderness has long been left to nature’s savagery and beauty, and remains under the fierce protection of the Conclaves of the Cycle.   The forest is steeped in Magic, and it is unlike any other forest in the world. It is said that time flows differently in the forest than elsewhere. You could be in there for hours and come out and see only a few minutes have gone by. Or you could be in there for several minutes and come out and see a century has gone by. Every leaf, flower, and branch is suffused with ancient fey energies as portions of the Spirit Grove and Eventide Veil bleed through into the Materium. The weather is often mild, though rain is faint and near-constant. The canopy is so thick that most sunlight and rainfall cannot get through, and most roads or paths through the forest are overgrown or impassable.   Most of the forest is a strange almost twilight world bathed only in the muted sunlight or moonlight able to penetrate the canopy of leaves. Dotted around the forest there are natural clearings where one can look up and actually glimpse the blue sky or the stars at night. The satyrs call these clearings 'glades'. As well as being areas open to the sun, they are often places where magical currents flow close to the surface.   There are other, smaller forests across Ragnarok that possess the same characteristics where smaller satyr enclaves gather to cultivate and grow their homes, such as the Sintallian, but none of these forests come close to the scope and size of the Ebonwood.   To the wilder populace of Ragnarok, it is an open secret that most satyrs have settled within these wilds due to their inhospitable nature to outsiders, and it's for this reason that few dare to venture into their dense and jungle-like thickets. Forest spirits, such as ents, dryads, and so on, are common in the Ebonwood, and when satyrs go to war to defend the borders of their woodland realm, the living trees of the forest fight alongside them. Strangers who venture into the Ebonwood are rarely seen again.   In the forest's south stands the great Ebonwood tree of Ar'manu, the central place of civilization for the satyr people. It is a single, enormous tree whose roots spread out for miles across the Ebonwood. It is the single greatest source of fey energy throughout the forest. Some even suspect that within the tree, there exists a direct connection to the Spirit Grove.   Due to the industrious nature of the Dominion of Doubt, many have attempted to harvest the Ebonwood forest’s gargantuan trees for their magic-suffused wood only to be met with an ambush of spears from the forest’s thick canopies. Eventually, a treaty was signed into law after Nhyriza Ul'Runegrove, a child of demon and satyr heritage, came to power in Savant’s Prospect. This treaty gave the dominion permission to take saplings from the forest to grow their own Ebonwood trees. Since then, a tenuous peace binds the dominion and the satyrs of the forest.
