Zhentil Monastery Building / Landmark in Tarien | World Anvil

Zhentil Monastery

Located to the far north and east of the Flietch-ta Empire, the nearly cubical limestone building sts in a valley at the confluence of the Frosted and Gestalt. The rough hewn stones rise up five stories, held in place by their shear weight without benefit of mortar. While certainly not of Khadrric craftsmanship, its construction is, nonetheless, an amazing tale.

In the early years of the Empire, many Flind exhibited strange powers over their environment. Some demonstrated the ability share their thoughts with others. Some found they could manipulate the natural world with their minds, moving objects from place to place. The most powerful could exert their wills on others, forcing them to obey their commands. Fearful of anything that could not be smitten with the might of muscles, Flind demonstrating these powers were pariah, cast out of society and forced to live as hermits in the great forests of the Empire.

When Emperor Cith Jarnet developed these powers as a young man, he knew the fate that awaited him, despite his imperial lineage. As such, he kept them secret until the passing of his father and his own ascension to the throne. Using his mental powers to help consolidate his claim, he unveiled them to the Council of the Crescent Moon, bending the delegates to his will. From that moment onward, Flind that exhibited such powers were nurtured rather than exiled.

Four decades later, Jarnet's great grandson, now Emperor, funded a center of excellence for Flind to study and practice their powers. Granting them land far from the center of the Empire, he sent them north. Over the years, the monks began to hone their skills cutting huge chunks of rock and levitating them into place to create the monastery.

Today it remains the home to a hundred or so Flind that exhibit the greatest mental talents in the Empire. Here they gather to strengthen their bodies and explore their minds, developing the abilities seen nowhere else on Tarien. From the ability to vanish from one location only to appear in another to the ability to focus their Ki into bolts of pure energy, they have developed a number of skills that they pass on from generation to generation.

Visitors to the monastery are rare, they have been known to accept disciples of different races, provided they demonstrate the mental powers and physical endurance common to their order. While most trained here remain their entire lives, focused on their inner souls rather than on Tarien at large, some chose to take their training and wander Tarien. Among those are the few Justicars who exhibit a propensity for mental powers. Others simply want the land, seeking enlightenment through the experiences they gain.
