Sen

Sen Rangatiriti (a.k.a. The Wise Fool)

Sen is a Wood Elf mystic and healer who served as the Fool of the Fey for the Autumn Court before being freed by the Dragonslayers of Cantonova. He is a devout cleric of Danu.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Sen is short for an elven man, standing only around 5'3". He wears his dark hair fairly long, and his skin and eyes are relatively light for a wood elf. His age is difficult to discern even for those familiar with elves. His nose is slightly crooked from an old injury.

Apparel & Accessories

Sen tends to prefer traditional wood elven clothing styles. He is most often seen in the clerical robes of a male priest of the Wild Dynasty. He wears an elessar pendant with the symbol of Danu, on which is also strung one half of a set of peridot elven engagement rings. He wears the other ring of the set on his right pinky finger. He carries an ornate hand-and-a-half sword, the Faithful Bastard.

Personal history

Early Life and Education

Sen was born in Y833 to an unknown elven family, likely on the outskirts of Arborcítta. He was surrendered to the Eldanír-in-Danu Temple during the Quoluvë outbreak of Y840, raised by the temple elders, and eventually enrolled in the clerical training program.   In Y909, Sen resurrected a young elf girl killed by wolves in the forest outside the temple. He brought the girl back to Eldanír, where she was allowed to enroll as an acolyte monk. To this day, Sen remains the youngest student at Eldanír-in-Danu to successfully perform a Resurrection ritual.

Adventuring Career

Sen left Eldanír-in-Danu in Y915, when the girl he resurrected was expelled from the temple. He traveled alongside her and played a small part in the Volian Revolution from Y917 to sometime in the Y930s.   Despite his skills as a healer and swordsman, Sen declined to join the formal priesthood and eventually retired from adventuring work. He married Hanna Ferraro, a human blacksmith in Y949, settled in her village of Garden Grove on the outskirts of Longobardi, and fathered and raised three sons with her.   After his wife's death in the early Y1000s, Sen returned to his life as a wanderer, this time primarily as a mystic and healer. He traveled throughout Scalados, Dreibach, and the Aquatic Kingdoms. He also returned intermittently to Eldanír, but refused to take a position in the formal priesthood or a permanent teaching position. In the 1020s, Master Kento crafted the Faithful Bastard sword for him.

Western Woods, Hermitage, and Feywild

By the 1070s, Sen had traveled to the Western Woods, where he became interested in the Nuél-orokh communities and druid circles therein. He eventually fell in with the Circle of the Lightkeepers, but he was largely distrusted until his work developing a Khemonga inoculation during the outbreaks of the Y1080s. After this treatment was widely distributed and proved effective in both preventing the disease's spread and lessening its severity, he was recognized as a Rangatira and given the title of Sen Rangatir'iti.   In the 1090s, he began traveling intermittently into the Feywild as a Planewalker. He soon transitioned to living full-time in the Feywild, where he befriended a number of Kitsune enough to study their Star Pearls extensively and learn the true names of nearly every archfey. Eventually, he was caught writing these names in his journal by the Pumpkin King and forced into service as the Wise Fool of the Autumn Court. The Pumpkin King's discovery of names in Sen's Fool's Tome prompted him to curse Sen with the inability to remember the name of any creature, including himself. Because the tome also served as a personal journal of sorts, he also lost a significant amount of the memories from his pre-Feywild life.

Escape from the Feywild

Sometime around Locumtempus Materiae Y1111, Sen met the Dragonslayers of Cantonova and gifted them his Fool's Tome, also known as the Book of Days.   When Tancred Brightblade, the King of Fools, stopped appearing at the Fools' meetings (approximately later that year), Sen attempted to travel to the Winter Court to find him. He left his sword with his longtime allies the Kitsune for safekeeping. On his travels, he was captured by the Erlkönig. He and the Vadderung attempted to torture Sen into giving up the true name of the Pumpkin King so that they could steal his power. Sen refused and was kept prisoner for an unknown amount of time, likely years or even decades.   The Dragonslayers found Sen in this state, imprisoned by the Eternal Ruins of the Autumn Court in a cage made of moonlight that suppressed most of his magical abilities. Rusalka transported him into a parallel dimension and pulled him out in an unknown spot on the Material Plane. Though he is still missing an enormous amount of information about his life, his ability to hold onto memories of names and travel to the Material Plane without apparent harm suggests that his fool's curse might be broken.   Upon release, Sen helped the Dragonslayers defeat the ancient black dragon Urux'fhior and his mate and obtained access to their hoard. He discovered the lost Staff of the Arakhi Rangatir'nghére of Arakhi Heketoro Rangatir'kaha within the hoard and now wields it.

Education

Sen studied at Eldanír-in-Danu and was consistently a top clerical student among his rank. After abandoning the program in Y915 (less than a decade before his scheduled graduation), he briefly studied at the Temple to the Wild later that year, but did not officially finish his formal education until the early Y1000s.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Sen has been a prodigy in healing magic from a young age, particularly in the discipline of resurrection. He has also studied the druidic arts extensively and has the ability to shapeshift into animal forms. He is an avid naturalist who has extensive knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Material Plane and the Feywild. Having been raised almost exclusively by the clergy of the Wild Dynasty, Sen is intimately familiar with the customs, politics, and traditions of the religion's practice.

Intellectual Characteristics

Sen is thoughtful, charming, patient, and typically cheerful, though there is a slight air of wistfulness and sadness to him. He speaks calmly and cleanly and is fond of subtle humor. He sometimes forgets words or switches languages due to the amount of time he has spent away from most or all other humanoids.

I think my favorite little detail is his crooked nose. It does a lot to kind of humanizing him, and elves are very often depicted as flawless. It's nice to see the consequences of battle actually become part of the character like that :) Great stuff

Thank you! Fun fact: this happened because the girl he resurrected immediately panicked and punched him when she woke up. Oops.
