Star Pearl
A star pearl is the most treasured possession of any Kitsune. They are each born holding one in their mouth, where it stays for most of their lifetime. Without it, they turn into ravenous, unthinking monsters; some say a star pearl holds the soul of a kitsune, though scholars debate fiercely whether the concept of a "soul" applies to any Fey creature.
A star pearl holds the true names of all creatures the kitsune has ever touched. It is also the source of their innate abilities in illusion, enchantment, and shapeshifting.

Star pearls are exceedingly rare, as kitsune never part with them willingly. Thus, the only way to get a star pearl is typically if the kitsune dies. Only a few dozen exist on the Material Plane.
