Quoluvë

Quoluvë (Elvish for "the sicknesses") can refer to any of a family of highly contagious illnesses that spread through Scalados most notably during the first half of the 800s. Symptoms vary between the strains, but almost all cases begin with fever, shortness of breath, and vertigo.   All mortal humanoids are susceptible to quoluvë. Unlike most naturally occurring diseases, it seems to be both more severe and more easily transmissible when contracted by elves.

Strains

Quolucarne

Quolucarne (literally "red sickness") is characterized by drastically lowered blood pressure, thinning of exterior skin and interior organ and blood vessel walls, and significantly reduced ability for the blood to clot. These effects last long after the patient has healed from the rest of the symptoms of the disease.

Quoluverza

Extreme nausea is the earliest symptom of quoluverza ("green sickness"), often accompanied by vomiting or loss of consciousness.

Quolunúla

Quolunúla ("dark sickness") is resistant to magical treatment. Scholars theorize that it may be occult or fiendish in origin, or else the virus that spreads this strain of the disease was somehow corrupted by the Lower Planes or by dark magic.

Quolunivë

The 10-year mortality rate for quolunivë ("pale sickness") is 97%.

Transmission & Vectors

Quoluvë is transmitted most commonly via breathing in aerosols expelled by an infected person. It can be spread via mucous membrane contact with blood, saliva, or mucus of an infected person.

Prognosis

Those infected with any strain of quoluvë live, on average, 30-50% shorter lives than the average uninfected member of the same species.
