Port Terrence

"Port Terrence is a good neighbor. They mind their business, they believe in fair trade, and they keep their eyes on the river rather than on our borders. If you go there, don't mention the smell, and avoid Terrence if you can. He's a bit touched in the head."   ~Kessler Shieldreaper, mayor of Alcedene

Government

Port Terrence is owned by a single Plutarch, Terrence the Scion. His representatives deliver his orders, which largely go unquestioned.

Defences

Port Terrence has a short 3 ft. palisade wall (often mocked by their neighbors) and supplements their defense with a system of dykes that can flood the surrounding landscape in the event of an evasion. Of all entities in the region, Terrence is the only one that makes the shallow, brass-bottomed riverboats capable of slipping over the flooded landscape and this gives them, in their view, enough of an edge to protect against invasion.   The village has a small Balatar Militia but an outsized Guard force for a settlement of its size.

Industry & Trade

Port Terrence is a fishing town first and foremost. They plunder the river for everything they can get, and are fully able to process, preserve, and ship the fish themselves as any self-respecting trading post.

Infrastructure

Port Terrence has a dock with a sizable warehouse for a settlement of its size. In this warehouse, fish and other meats from the river are preserved in salt and stored before being shipped upriver to their primary fishmarket, Krezzym.   Port Terrence sports a watermill that is connected to the forge, which operates the large hammer there. In this fashion, the bronze-bottomed riverboats have their hulls pounded flat and tempered in preparation for mounting.   Finally, the town has two wells. One stands at the top of the hill and the water is known to be purer, and the other is closer to the river and is fed by an underground tributary.

Guilds and Factions

Partially due to the low population, partially due to the strict controls of the hereditary landlord,, factionalism is extremely low in Port Terrence.

History

Founded in 638 as a trading post on the ruins of an older town, Port Terrence was initially just Terrence the First and his immediate family. When he struck success in the river, he officially claimed 40 acres of land and built a facade village. When the construction was finished, he began gathering the disparate lodges and cabins along the Grasping River and renting his houses to the fishermen and families he found under the guise of mutual defense. His descendants have held sway over the town ever since.

Architecture

Most of the buildings in Port Terrence are wooden and mudbrick structures. In the last few years, an art style centering around driftwood has led to the widespread fad of mounting driftwood facades over the basic structures. Some of these can be fairly dark, depicting scenes of drowning or the Czavhy

Geography

Port Terrence is located on the riverbank of the West Grasping River. "Uptown" refers to the direction of town further inland, which is on a hill, while "downtown" refers to the physically lower areas beside the river. The whole town is a steady slope downward towards the docks. What ground that isn't paved in cobblestones is covered in sandgrass.

Natural Resources

Port Terrence subsists primarily on river goods: river pearls, clamshells, fish and fish byproducts.
