Black Library

"They built the road around the Black Library. They didn't demolish it, they didn't repurpose it. They made the road twelve miles longer to avoid it. That's really what you need to know."   ~Margrave Arronax SkinnerElector of Cambreath

Purpose / Function

Originally built as a repository of knowledge and a Deminite monastery, it has become a haunted and extraordinarily deadly ruin.

Architecture

The Black Library is built from Gorgonwood blocks imported from Prunyth. It has a tall, narrow design with high gables and a sturdy series of arches. The windows have all been stained black to prevent light from damaging the texts inside.

History

On the grounds of the Black Library was a repository of knowledge long before humans took Seaudyr. Its foundations were a Grimhii royal library for some unknown mage-king. Many of the stone tablets still sit on their rotating pedestals. In the Year 350, the Deminite monks that built the facility now known as the Black Library with an eye to transcribing ancient wisdom as well as collecting modern contemplative musings and knowledge.    The monks of the Black Library became insular and taciturn not long after the outset of the Scourging, though whether this was in response to or preceded accusations of their part in the demonic incursion isn't well known. By the Year 500, the monks had eschewed all outside contact as a matter of habit. They would send one of their number, under vow of silence, with a written note into nearby towns to buy essentials which they could not provide themselves.   This silence was broken in the Year 535, when Brother Winsler wandered into Faeling, babbling about the 'precipice of truth' and the true nature of the world. No brother of the Black Library was ever seen or heard from again.   In the Year 580, an expedition was sent to the Black Library to determine what had happened. One survivor returned, mad beyond all hope of recovery, and they built a gateless fence around the library.   In the Year 866, the White Tower took custody of the Black Library and it became a permanent research outpost. They have been proceeding with their characteristic caution ever since.
