Plutarch Rank/Title in Kobos | World Anvil

Plutarch

Plutarch is an unofficial title, but generally an undisputed one. Plutarchs are the wealthiest individual or individuals of a settlement, traditionally consulted on any financial concerns by the leaders and prominent people with the money to throw around. Regardless of how they made their money, they tend to be moneylenders and investors of the local businesses. They patronize politicians and often bankroll adventurers and scholars.

Appointment

Plutarchs aren't raised to the rank so much as they are simply understood to BE that rank.

Duties

Plutarchs by their nature are stewards of their local economies. After all, if the people they sponsor or sell to go bankrupt, how will they themselves continue to thrive?

Responsibilities

Plutarchs fulfill their duties by lending and investing, many of them are responsible for local mints, they own businesses and give advice on monetary and fiscal policy. They are a large source of tax revenue.

History

Plutarchs are a holdover from the long bygone days of the ancient monarchies. Bestowed with the title of barons and baronets, they were responsible for raising money and managing the wealth of kings. Later, during the long enslavement under the dragons, plutarchs were responsible for increasing draconic hoards. The class was redeemed near the end of enslavement when many plutarchs working together over a long period of time had embezzled enough from the dragons to purchase a fleet of ships and an army's worth of weapons and supplies for the flight.

Cultural Significance

"Plutarch in another town" is a common expression for someone who is successful but not as successful as the highest echelon of where they currently reside. Sometimes this is combined with a derogatory jab at a poorer community, IE "He'd be a Plutarch in Emberhollow."   Additionally, a town's wealthiness is often gauged by the wealth and number of their local plutarchs.
