Prodigious Girl

Christopher Yancy Patterson (a.k.a. Chris)

"You're still thinking of yourself as Chris Patterson. You gotta start thinking, 'I am Prodigious Girl, I am Prodigious Girl.' You gotta get inside her head."

"I have a feeling you're not envisioning my head as my most defining attribute."

Caleb and Chris

Chris Patterson always dreamed of being a superhero! Helping people with amazing superpowers while wearing a flashy costume with...cleavage and a miniskirt? Okay, granted, his plan to sidekick to Prodigy and take the old man's name didn't go exactly according to plan. Even less so when his parents assumed that Chris was trans, so now he's dressing as a teenage girl in his off hours. Still, as PG, Chris is doing a lot of good for the people of Faraday City. Although pretty soon he's going to have to confront the mysterious origins of his powers as it becomes increasingly evident that Chris is more than he appears...in any of his identities.

Powers and Abilities

  • Super Strength - Prodigious Girl is extremely strong, easily able to lift a small car.
  • Invulnerability - She is extremely resistant to damage, and highly resistant to small-caliber weapons fire.
  • Flight - Her top flying speed is just over 300 mph, which she can maintain for short periods of time. She was able to sustain speeds of less than 200 mph for a 1400 mile journey, which exhausted her.
  • Shapeshifting (limited) - PG has two "template forms" which she can swap between instantaneously, which she uses for her male Chris body and her female body as PG. Within each template, she can shift to other humanoid forms, both male and female. She can make small changes in the span of minutes, but a complete body change can take her several hours.
  • Healing - A side effect of PG's shapeshifting power is that if she concentrates on renewing the form that she is in, it provides a measure of healing. Surface cuts and bruises can be healed immediately, although more severe deep-tissue damage takes longer to heal.
  • Power Mimicry (sporadic) - PG has the ability to mimic the powers of nearby metahumans, but she cannot fully control this power, and it largely seems to activate under periods of life-threatening duress.
    • Spirit Connection - Unlike her other powers, her mimicry ability seems to be connected to her spirit rather than her body, as she was able to use it even when trapped in her cousin Lydia's body.
    • Power Activation - While in Lydia's body, PG was apparently able to infuse the body with metahuman abilities that have persisted even after returning to their own bodies. How this works, or if it is limited to activating unascended metas, or if PG can control what powers are so "gifted" is unknown.
It's been observed that PG's powers are unusual for a metahuman, in that there is usually more of a unifying theme. (For instance, a weather controller might summon lightning and fly by use of their powers, but they wouldn't additionally have an unrelated power, like invisibility.) The reasons for this are as yet unknown, but it's implied that it might have something to do with her being one of the Kindred, but this is unconfirmed.

Items and Equipment

  • IntelliComm ("iComm")
  • CosFit
  • Warp Space Storage
  • Utility Belt - Much like her mentor, Prodigious Girl carries a utility belt with a
variety of specialized grenades and weapons. However, unlike
Prodigy, she opts to carry only non-lethal weapons, including:
      • Flashbang Grenade
      • Stun Grenade
      • Taserweb Grenade
In addition, her utility belt has a complex voice command function that
sets off a self-destruct, triggering all of the grenades simultaneously.
    Category: Utility, Weapon
  • Elysian Starblossom - plant Chris keeps at his desk

Personal history

One of Chris's biggest open questions is how he got his powers. All he remembers of that fateful day walking in the park was seeing a whirling pink energy vortex. He ran away and plowed full-speed into a tree, knocking himself unconscious. When he awoke, he had apparently ascended and activated his latent metahuman powers...somehow. Clearly, there's more to the story, yet to be revealed.   Hiding his activities as PG from his parents is a challenge, and he fears coming out to them, given that they disapprove of superheroes. However, the event that really complicated Chris's life was when his parents found a stash of girls' clothes that he'd been secretly wearing as PG, and they jumped to the conclusion that the big secret he was keeping from them was that he was secretly transgender. Rather than tell them the truth, Chris went along with the lie. Unfortunately, due to an undisclosed but highly emotional event in his mother's past regarding secrecy and shame, she was dead set against secrecy in the matter, instead insisting that Chris's trans inclinations become public. As a result, this added a third "identity" to Chris's life as "Christie," a role he's been mandated to explore at least until the end of his summer vacation.

Gender Identity

Complicated! In his male mode, Chris is a pretty typical teenage guy. However, PG tends to read as a pretty typical girl, and Chris has noted that he's fairly comfortable as PG. (To the point where at one point when it looked like he might be stuck permanently in his cousin Lydia's body, he was more concerned about losing his powers than staying as a girl.)

Although Chris complains about his crossdressing identity as "Christie," Caleb has noticed that Chris seems to have taken to it rather quickly. And even Chris's mother has commented that if he refused to go along with the mandated crossdressing for the summer, there wouldn't be much they could do to make him do it. Chris contends that once the summer is over, he intends to give it up. But the longer it goes on, and the more naturally he slides into the role, the more skeptical the people around him remain.

Sexuality

Chris is attracted to girls, which appears to also be the case as PG. In fact, Trixie made a pass at PG at one point and kissed her, figuring that PG was obviously into girls since she could frequently be seen checking out other superheroines. (And being "as obvious as a boy" about it.)

Education

Employment

Full-time student.   As Christie, has a summer internship at AGON Technologies working for Marty Maddox and four other bosses doing secretarial duties. Official title is a "Level 1 Administrative Synergstic Coordinator."

Failures & Embarrassments

Chris's biggest source of embarrassment is having people know about his crossdressing. Interestingly, however, although he complains about the discomfort, when interacting with others he never appears awkward or self-conscious. He seems more concerned about what people will think of him than actually dressing and being seen as Christie.   On an unrelated note, the previous summer, Chris held a job working at the snack shack at the neighborhood pool, but he was fired when he caught his boss skimming profits from the snacks.

Morality & Philosophy

Chris originally perceived the supers of Faraday City in very black-and-white terms, like with a four-color comic book mentality. His experiences as Prodigious Girl have shown him the hard way that there are several more morally gray areas than he's comfortable with. However, he still remains optimistic and highly idealistic, making an interesting foil for the more cynical Prodigy.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Even before becoming PG, Chris didn't have much luck dating. Then between his superheroing and being outed for his crossdressing, he figured he didn't have a shot. However, rather unexpectedly, he's tentatively begun a relationship with his classmate Leah Paredes, who has seen him as Christie on a few occasions, and isn't at all bothered by it.

Hobbies & Pets

Chris and Caleb are part of a gaming group.   Chris has a dog that is yellow Labrador / Chihuahua mix named Underdog, but only answers to the name Undie. Undie is apparently not very smart.

Chris's Theories

Chris has put forth some unique theories while living in Faraday City...

Improvisational Lizard Lying

Since the evolved mammal portion of my brain had quickly assessed the situation and opted to retreat under the cerebral blankets of my mind and suck its thumb while curled up in a fetal position, I handed complete control of my mouth to the unevolved lizard portion of my brain. If you've never tried it, it's a fascinating exercise. The net effect is that since you have no earthly idea what's about to come out of your mouth, you actually get to hear the lies at the same time as your audience and can appreciate them in a sort of detached way. It's absolutely terrifying.

Patterson's Law of Karmic Imbalance (PLoKI)

Newton's Third Law of Motion states that for every action, there must be an equal and opposite reaction. (I've never entirely figured out how that works when I'm able to fly and still lift a car or throw a punch, but Newton was a smarter guy than me, so I figured I'd let him skate on that one.) However, I'd personally come to suspect that when it came to luck--particularly my own luck--the same could not be said. In my experience, whenever something good happened, it was usually followed by something worse. Thus, instead of merely maintaining the status quo, it injected energy into the system as I invariably was forced to scramble around to overcome the new adversity.

I've taken to calling it "Patterson's Law of Karmic Imbalance," or PLoKI for short.
