Xenos

"I can afford to be patient, because I have conquered death itself."
— Xenos

Xenos was originally a golem, a magical construct created centuries ago to fight for the dark sorceress Rhiannon Blackwood. But with her battles won and her enemies defeated, the creature was forgotten and left to gather dust. Or so it was thought. In secret, he evolved and learned the magic of trading spirits with another, and escaped. As he stole lives and assumed identities down through the ages, he used his skills and resources in his crusade against both magic users and other body-swappers. He also either adopted or was given a name: Xenos (“stranger”).

More than 20 years ago, Xenos stole the body of Carson Beaumont (also known as the vigilante Chimera), and trapped him in the body of a hooker. Xenos then presenting the transformed Beaumont to his greatest enemy, Ferdinand Marchetti, the head of the Marchetti Crime Family, to spend his days as "Chi Chi," the gangster's sexual plaything.

Xenos recently attempted to retrieve the Eidetic Charm from Vagabond and Echelon, a magical token that would have let him read or manipulate memories, making him nearly unstoppable. He also stole Prodigious Girl's body, believing her to be one of The Kindred. His plans were thwarted thanks to the efforts of The Faraday Irregulars, and he found himself dying and on the streets of Faraday City, being hunted by a mysterious shadow...

Xenos subsequently encountered Chase to (unknowingly) assemble a prospective list of candidates for his new "mount," ideally a metahuman with power and influence whose life he could readily step into. Unfortunately, the wounds Xenos suffered from his fight proved to be too grave, and he was barely able to locate Chase before Beaumont's body finally expired.

Unfortunately for Xenos, this led to a number of problems. First, he was being hunted by Victoria Dunne, one of his earlier victims. Second, the dossiers that Chase had put together had already been stolen by a man working for Desmond Marcks. But his most serious problem was that he feared that in his body swap with Chase, he might have inadvertently created another body swapper. And Xenos had gone to great lengths to eliminate his competition in that arena.

To solving all of his problems at once, Xenos swapped with Victoria and set her loose against Chase, even as he ingratitated himself to Chase as a fellow victim of "Xenos." This allowed him to keep an eye on Chase, and also to work to locate the missing dossiers. Unfortunately, Xenos's plans went awry and he found himself outmaneuvered by the transformed detective. Xenos found himself trapped in Jessie Harber's body. Chase believes that Xenos met his end there, extinguished by Jessie's spirit. Though it is possible that he is imprisoned within her mind, unable to do anything to affect the outside world as he looks helplessly through her eyes.

Show spoiler
Speaking as the author, I consider Xenos dead. However, an interesting wrinkle is that Chase in Jessie's body seemingly had unprotected sex with a young man. It's unclear what birth control Jessie uses, but it raises the possibilty that Jessie might be pregnant. If Xenos is merely trapped and not dead, possessing the mind of the baby might provide him with a possible means of escape.

Powers and Abilities

  • Body Swapping
    • Xenos has the ability to exchange spirits with another person, essentially swapping bodies with them. The ability seems to have a relatively short range, perhaps 20 feet or so. There doesn't seem to be any way to resist this power, although Prodigious Girl was able to fight and defeat him on the spirit plane when she duplicated his powers. Additionally, Enchantrix was seemingly able to create "soulshield talismans" (protective talismans with a rune of spirit shielding) which were theoretically capable of blocking Xenos's power, though this was never put to the test.

Locations

Xenos's Warp Space Storage

Secreted away in warp space, but significantly bigger than
the usual "warp locker," Xenos maintains this hidden location
apparently as a convenient place to store the many useful
items and artifacts he's collected over the centuries.

Intellectual Characteristics

Cunning, methodical, and ruthless, Xenos has learned over the centuries to be careful. An excellent strategist and long-term thinker, he has been careful to systematically eliminate any person or group who would be a threat to him. He has hunted down and killed all other known body swappers because he found them to be reckless and careless, and drew too much attention.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Xenos is on a crusade against magic users for undisclosed reasons. However, given his tendency to eliminate anyone who might pose a danger to his existence, it's likely that he feels threatened by them, perhaps fearing a return to being an unthinking golem and lacking all agency. If that is indeed the case, its curious that he has yet to eliminate Rhiannon Blackwood, his creator. The likeliest explanation for that is that he's afraid of her, although Xenos himself would almost certainly reject such a suggestion.

Xenos also has a vendetta against other body swappers, but this seems to be driven by a desire to not have competition, or endure the scrutiny that other less cautious body swappers tend to draw to his own activities.
