Charade

Salinger Chase (a.k.a. Chase)

"In a town filled with masks, everybody's got something to hide.”
— Chase

Chase was a down-on-his-luck nobody. A wannabe detective with a dark past and a bleak future, always on the lookout for the next edge or scam. But after a dangerous encounter with the mysterious Xenos, Chase found himself with the ability to swap bodies with others! He’s currently living in the body of his sly and deadly ex as he figures out what to do with his newfound abilities. But whether he’ll fall in with the heroes or villains is anybody’s guess...

Powers and Abiliites

  • Body Swapping
    • Chase has the ability to exchange spirits with another person, essentially swapping bodies with them. Although the ability seems to be the same as Xenos, Chase lacks Xenos's expertise. Xenos seemed to have a relatively short range, perhaps 20 feet or so.
    • It's likely that Chase also has the same limitations as Xenos, such as when Prodigious Girl was able to fight and defeat Xenos on the spirit plane when she duplicated his powers. Enchantrix was also seemingly able to create "soulshield talismans" (protective talismans with a rune of spirit shielding) which were theoretically capable of blocking Xenos's power, though this was never put to the test.

Items and Equipment

  • Chase's gold Zippo lighter
  • Xenos's IntelliComm ("iComm") (used for accessing Xenos's warp space storage)

Locations

Xenos's Warp Space Storage

Secreted away in warp space, but significantly bigger than
the usual "warp locker," Xenos maintains this hidden location
apparently as a convenient place to store the many useful
items and artifacts he's collected over the centuries.

Chase's Place

Located in a run-down part of the city, Chase's place was a combination
of an apartment and an office that he used for his Private Investigator's
work. The building itself was aging and falling apart, pre-dating the
establishment of Faraday City. There was apparently a push by developers
to buy out the building and redevelop it into something more modern, and
it seemed that Chase was one of the last holdouts. Following Chase's
apparent death (see: Charade), this space has now been abandoned,
seemingly clearing the way for the redevelopment plans.

Mental characteristics

Sexuality

As a man, Chase was cisgender and heterosexual. However, in his brief time in Jessie Harber's body (and possibly influenced by her personality), he exhibited an attraction to men as well as women. He also seems to have adjusted fairly quickly to being in Madeline Capshaw's body, suggesting that his body-swapping spirit may be more genderfluid.

Employment

In his former life, Chase was a Private Investigator, but primarily operated as a freelance claims investigator for Faraday Insurance. As Madeline, he is independently wealthy and doesn't appear to have a regular job.

Personality Characteristics

Personality Quirks

Chase has a nervous habit of fooling with Madeline's gold Zippo lighter, which was the murder weapon Chase used to kill her husband, Augustus Capshaw. He would frequently open and close the lighter, but given the danger of the device, this would be akin to absently playing with a loaded weapon. As such, it's possible that his doing so was represenative of subconscious thoughts of killing himself out of guilt for his part in the murder. However, now that he seems to have reached a measure of acceptance, he no longer opens and closes the lighter, though he may still hold it from time to time.
