"He said I could be his partner! Promethean! Can you believe it?""That would be pretty cool, I guess."
"You guess? Caleb, he's one of the greats! You remember when he fought those Blood Golems? Or how about that time when the Attraxi Genie swapped everyone's heads around and Promethean beat him using Ephemeral's body? That could be me!"
"Why would you want your head on Ephemeral's body?"

Gangs
Gang activity in the city was shockingly high, considering that it seemed like everybody and their pet chinchilla seemed to have superpowers these days. Though partially that was also due to the fact that many of the street gangs had figured out how to infuse themselves with low-grade powers and fancied themselves as players as they terrorized helpless citizens.

Animancers |
The Animancers are magic users with the ability to summon otherworldly hellbeast and demonspawn creatures to do their bidding. Such creatures include:

Hemlocks |
Hemlocks use black magic that frequently has to do with the ability to control nature, able to manifest things like tanglevines. However, they're also able to loose dark magic blasts and even enhance their own physiques with things like low-level super strength. Hemlocks can often be spotted by the creeping vine tattoos they prominently wear. Known Members: Vagabond (former member) |

The Marchetti |
Headed by the domineering and merciless Ferdinand Marchetti, it's unknown if the Marchetti Crime Family incorporates any metahumans, or perhaps just gets by with high-tech weaponry, but any criminal empire that operates within Faraday City would have to be ready for anything. Over 20 years go, the Marchettis were bedeviled by the ruthless vigilante, Chimera. It might have ended badly for them if not for the intervention of the body-swapping villain Xenos, who approached Chimera in his secret identity of Carson Beaumont, and trapped him in the body of a hooker! Presenting the transformed Beaumont to Marchetti as a peace offering, Xenos went on his way. Meanwhile, Beaumont spent the next two decades as the sexual plaything of his greatest enemy.

Revenants |
The Revenants are practitioners of death magic who operate out of a complex series of catacombs hidden beneath Faraday City. To many citizens, the Revenants are little more than a street gang, one of several that plague the city. Others assume that they're some kind of a cult, running around in magical robes with deep hoods and dangerous curved blades. The group's true intentions are unknown, but their dangerous weapons and dark magic make them hazardous opponents. The group frequently squares off with the other magic-based gangs, the Hemlocks and the Zealots, as they each seek magical power to gain an upper hand over the others. So far (with the assistance of Faraday City's hero population), this three-way battle has maintained a stalemate. This stalemate was disrupted by the mage killing body-swapping villain Xenos. He took over the body of Bloodraven (leader of the Zealot witches) and assassinated the head of the Revenants, Archmagister Ithor, leaving her to take the blame, and setting off a gang war. Fortuntely, Arcturus and Prodigy were able to get the situation under control, but the temporary peace is unlikely to last. Locations: The Revenants' Catacombs, a sprawling warren of passageways and tunnels beneath Faraday City Known Members:

Techrats |
In a place like Faraday City, the Techrats fascination with technology might have made them just another wannabe street gang with dreams of dominance. But they significantly upped their game (and their commitment) as they began making cybernetic changes to their bodies, incorporating high-tech weapons and defenses to make them a match for many metahumans. Some have argued that the Techrats would have had enjoyed greater success if not for their constant infighting, allowing for their frequently anarchic natures. Known Members:

Zealots |
The Zealot witches are a coven of women who are practitioners of blood magic. Unlike the Hemlocks and Revenants, the Zealots tend to maintain a lower profile and manipulate things behind the scenes. This approach caused many to wonder if the group was even real for a long time. However, the more overt activities of the rival gangs have forced the Zealots into a more active and visible role, and in combat, they have proven to easily be the equal of their adversaries. To date, no male members have been seen. Whether this means that the Zealots are a female-only organization, or if the male members are remaining behind the scenes is yet to be determined. The situation degenerated rapidly when the body-swapping villain Xenos took over the body of the Zealots' leader, Bloodraven, and used her body to publicly assassinate the leader of the Revenants. This set off a gang war between the two factions that was only settled thanks to the efforts of Arcturus and Prodigy. What became of Bloodraven is unknown. Known Members:

(Unknown Crime Boss |
Criminals in Faraday City have learned to be sneaky and to know how to manipulate their foes. PG relates a story of a four-piece instrumental street band who would hang out on a corner, and every time a superhero fight would break out, the band would break out into a pretty capable rendition of John Williams' theme from Superman. It was apparently pretty awesome, and it very quickly became a well-patrolled corner, as the young heroes would hope some gang members would start something. Unfortunately, this was not to last. It came out some time later that the band had been hired by a crime boss who wanted to draw heroes away from her operations on the other side of the city. |

AGON Technologies |
Founded many years ago by Marty Maddox , the original kid sidekick for The Liberty Squadron, AGON Technologies has since grown to be a technology powerhouse in Faraday City. Although its primary focus has been to provide technology and support to the city's heroes and law enforcement, the varying nature of the company's projects is such that it allows the company to poke its nose into almost any high-tech undertaking going on within the city. Notably, the weapons and technology that AGON develops for law enforcement tend to favor non-lethal solutions. Although guns, blasters, and other lethal weapons remain part of the cops' arsenal as they square off against metahuman opponents, weapons designed to stun, ensnare, or incapacitate are becoming more prevalent thanks to companies like AGON. The company's rather unusual name is not an acronym, as many believe. At one point, the company's name was Paragon Technologies, except that part of the signage was destroyed during the events of the Unanimity Invasion, reading only "AGON Technologies." Rather than merely fix the sign, Maddox chose to rebrand the company after the Greek god Agon, who was a god of conflict and struggle. He noted that the city has been defined by its struggles, and wanted a reminder of that. It has since been pointed out that the term agon can also mean a philosophical debate between two contrasting views, such as order and chaos, old age and youth, cynicism and idealism...or male and female. Maddox can frequently be seen having lunch on the roof of the AGON headquarters building, watching the supers fly by, and offering words of wisdom to young heroes. Faraday Labs (and Dr. Faraday) are best known for their role in triggering The Turning Point, the event that unlocked metagene potential in millions of people. However, since then, the company has been at the forefront of metahuman research and support, and has been responsible for the development of many key inventions used my superheroes every day as they proect the city, including:

Public Works
I hunkered down and over the next couple of hours unsuccessfully tried endless combinations of hero names while a bored Caleb surfed on his phone and sneaked pictures of heroines as they passed by. But as time crawled on and my frustration mounted, I came to view this jaded city employee as a guardian of the gate, placed before me as an obstacle to prevent me from achieving my destiny. She was like a winged valkyrie who fiercely guarded the gateway to glory eternal, but instead of being armed with a sword and shield, she wielded her indifference and an outdated computer. She was a canny adversary.

Faraday City
|
A fairly average high school in Faraday City, not that any such things exist here. The superhero craze has reached here as well, since the rise in teenage heroes meant that students are constantly on the lookout for clues that a young hero might be hiding in their midst. A garish piece of jewelry emblazoned with a magic rune or the flash of a bright primary color fabric poking out of one's trousers could trigger suspicion. Nobody is immune. Even a math club geek could potentially be a young master inventor in disguise, and more than one kid had gotten pantsed for wearing colored underwear that looked a little too suspicious. |
Being a cop in a city of superheroes and supervillains is a difficult and dangerous job. Although the role of the police versus the role of deputized superheroes remains a contentious debate, most cops and heroes would prefer to be working together. The technology available to the police has vastly improved thanks to the services of third-party companies like AGON Technologies or Faraday Labs, giving the police a much-needed edge when squaring off against metahuman gangs or supervillains. While guns, blasters, and attack drones remain a part of the police's arsenal, notably, those companies have increasingly pushed for non-lethal weapons designed to incapacititate, rather than kill. Faraday City
|
Even in a high-tech city of wonders like Faraday City, people still have to get to work. And in addition to the usual problems of accidents or traffic jams, sometimes traffic has to get re-routed around emergent situations like an attack of giant mutant cicadas, or the unauthorized landing of a steampunk dirigible visiting from another dimension. The dedicated employees of the FCTA work to get you to your destination quickly and safely while you sit back and relax! (You might even spot a hero as one of your fellow passengers--not all of them have the Astromobile!)

Although taking the bus was a genuine need in the babysitting
story, heroes on public transportation was also a little nod to City of Heroes, where to go from zone to zone, you frequently had to take the monorail. It's always entertaining in the game to see costumed heroes all piling into the train to ride to their destination! |

Registered superheroes who work with the police are the backbone of an integrated law enforcement response to metahuman attacks. A small minority of registrants have noted some minor problems registering a unique superhero name. See: Superhero Registration |
