Sabrina and Wendie (and me!) - Dallas All-Con 2017
"I'm...third? How did two people get ahead of me on this? I invented Prodigious Girl.""You gotta move fast. People know a good thing when they see it."
Identity Crisis was the first story I wrote where I commissioned artists to do illustrations, so after the story was written, it took some time for all of the art to get done. However, since my friend Sabrina had read the story and had an inside track on the art, she made costumes for her and her wife Wendie to wear at All-Con in March 2017. Which actually means they had their costumes even before the story was released! Meanwhile, I was working on a costume of my own, but I wasn't planning to debut it until six months later at DragonCon.
So...yeah. Despite having invented the character, I was the third person to cosplay as her!
Sabrina and Wendie did a really amazing job cosplaying Prodigious Girl and "Lady Prodigy," as the pictures can attest. But since I wanted to get in on the fun, I dressed up as Chris's crossdressing alter ego "Christie," taken from a moment from the story when he's wearing a Prodigious Girl t-shirt. So, I actually got to "fangirl" over my own character while dressed as that character's secret identity!
The "Finding Dee" comic appearance
And I can't mention Sabrina's cosplay without mentioning this story. A super-talented artist friend of mine, Dee Fish, does a fantastic and funny webcomic called Finding Dee. A few months after this convention, Dee ran this particular strip.I love the creative ripple effects of this...I create the character, Sabrina cosplays as the character, and Dee does a comic featuring Sabrina cosplayed as the charater! Very meta. :)
Me Cosplaying as Prodigious Girl
In September 2017 I debuted my own Prodigious Girl costume at DragonCon. I've worn it several times, including to Washington DC's annual High Heel Race, Sabrina and Wendie's "Superfriends With Benefits" Halloween party, and Awesome Con.This is a sampling, but many more photos can be found on my Flickr site!
Paul Cosplaying as The Lavender Scare
My friend Paul and I often participated in Washingon DC's annual pre-Halloween "High Heel Race." He thought it would be fun if I wore my Prodigious Girl costume, so we invented the character of The Lavender Scare so he could have a matching costume. (And if you read the spoiler text on that page, you can read the hilariously frustrating process I went through to create that character with him!)
Me Cosplaying as Prodigious Girl (Steampunk version)
I'm not above a little "Elseworlds" cosplay! One year Paul decided to wear his Lavender Scare costume to DragonCon, but I was reluctant to just wear my PG costume again, since I'd already done it a couple years before. So, not to leave him hanging, I came up with this alternate version of PG so we'd match!Although in fairness, I basically had this cosplay on hand already. When I was initially constructing my PG costume, I'd bought some costume pieces I didn't end up using (including these extremely cool boots), so I'd repurposed used them to make an outfit for the Ren Fest the year before. At the time, I joked I was one black wig away from being an Elseworlds Prodigious Girl, so with this costume I leaned in on the concept!
As with my PG pics above, this is just a sampler, but if you want to see some more, they're up on my Flickr page.
