Jérôme Zériesse is the Heir to one of the most important Light Houses in the empire and one of the suitors participating in Lady Annabelle Alyssenne's Courtship Rituals. He will also be the main character of the upcoming Book 4.
Birth
Jérôme Zériesse is a son of House Zériesse, the second most important and larger Light House in the empire (after the Alyssennes), and the largest one in the north of the continent. His parents are Lord Hippolyte Zériesse and Lord-Consort Quentin Zériesse (see The Zériessiens). Jérôme was born thanks to a fertility ritual done by his two fathers and a surrogate mother. This was controversial among the the Light political faction, as they have grown more and more opposed to rituals in recent decades, and even 30 years later Light mages still look at Jérôme with a lot of suspicion. This is far from the case in the Zériesse Estate, where his birth is seen as the culmination and validation of the Zériesses' unique political system. Indeed, the members of the House of Zériesse are strong believers in equality between people regardless of their magical powers. As a results, the Zériesses have now given up almost all of their political power to a local elected assembly, and they obey to their rulings and put their strong magic in their service. Before marrying lord Zériesse, Quentin was elected leader of that assembly, and he is still a very popular political leader in the Estate.Childhood
Jérôme grew up in close contact with the commoners of the his Estate and forged tight friendship links with many of them. His best friend is Rosalie Gauthier, an extremely clever and political-engaged young lady who could never hope to have any influence in another Estate because of her weak magic. Here, however, Quentin has even chosen her as his political heir, something Jérôme himself could never be as a blood member of House Zériesse.Character
Jérôme shares the fun-loving attitude of his father Lord Hippolyte and their friend Cyril Blissenne. However, he has also inherited some of his other father Quentin's seriousness, as well as and both fathers' devotions to their Estate and its inhabitants. This has made Jérôme believe closely in all of what his family is trying to achieve, but has also made him sometimes chafes under the restrictions imposed on him by this political system and at being forced to obey all orders from the assembly regardless of his own opinion.Nowadays
Jérôme wants to continue his family work by helping the Estate in what way he is still allowed to do. Thus, he has endeavour to master his family line-gift's of battle magic by intensely training under his father Hippolyte and their friend Cyril, and he is currently working in law enforcement in the Estate. He also hopes to soon become strong enough to join the Light army under the command of Lord Scranenne (see The Light mages). In Book 1: Deadly Courtship, Lady Annabelle Alyssenne has just rejoined the imperial society after 25 years of absence since her parents' murders, and in a quest to find allies, she has initiated Courtship Rituals. Jérôme chose to participate in them so as to still honour the alliance and close friendship links between their families despite the Zériesse Estate not being able—or willing—to help her much. His only hope with this is to establish to make Annabelle feel welcome among the Light society and to maybe make a friend. Jérôme will be the main character in Book 4.Table of Contents
