Fyra
History and Government
Fyra has a long and proud history, its Fyrskolt peoples coming under the reign of the Althraxian Empire in the early ages and serving as a tumultuous vassal until the Empire's final collapse. During its tenure as a member of the Empire, Fyra had long held a reputation of banditry and separatism, but it has nonetheless emerged as one of the more stable of the Border Kingdoms in the modern day. Never an agricultural hotbed, Fyra today survives off of a combination of its extensive black market, mineral wealth (by way of its long-held ownership of the Grunsfeldt Range), and its growing industrial bases. Despite being an oddity amongst the Althraxian Empire's Ziva peoples, it is not honest for the Fyrskolt to lay sole claim to the nation's heritage. Their numbers are bolstered by a sizable Halfling population, which makes up about half of Fyra's citizenry, and which originates in the broader empire's attempts to settle the southern Savirree Valley through expulsion and deportation. The tension caused by this policy has largely simmered away, though struggles between the two peoples persist to this day, leading to the unique governmental form under which Fyra operates. In Fyra's dual government, a Fyrskolt king is curtailed by a Cabinet, made up of the nation's most prominent nobles and merchants through random selection. This government makes Fyra nominally republican, though in practice the Cabinet tends to be dominated by dictatorial figures, be they Fyrskolt or Halfling. The exact balance of power between these two facets of governance has changed dramatically over time, but the government itself has not; in fact, the King and Cabinet system has shown to be remarkably stable, defying the expectations of many throughout the world. It is also remarkable to note that Fyra's government has had minimal impact on its policies abroad. Regardless of who is in power, the nation has maintained a proud tradition of supporting independence movements and market liberalization around the world. Though it rarely engages in direct hostilities, Fyra has long been accused of meddling, be it in the Trinean Liberty War, its position in favor of recognizing Sylla and Decia's dark counts, and even its foundational position in the founding of the Violet Coalition against Delos'Nordan in response to the Marigold Crisis. This drive for independence stems from the nation's own experiences under the thrall of the Althraxian Empire, and later Coszabea before its dissolution through Fyra's involvement in The Little War.Cities
Dithra
Dithra is the capital of Fyra, and by far its most populous city. Dithra is sometimes referred to as the "Port of Gold," for it has been the center of trade within the Border Kingdoms since the heights of the Althraxian Empire. It also oversees much trade with The Protectorate-Commonwealth, sponsoring a lightning rail that connects the city with the province of Reinsfeld so as to enable rapid transport of goods. Dithra is also an important center for banking in the world, and ships departing the Commonwealth or Barisea often visit it as an intermediary stop so that they may get their currency exchanged.Geography
Fyra is a nation which has long exhausted its forest resources, and despite efforts to replant woods it remains a field of grasslands interrupted in its eastern lands by rolling hills. The Grunsfeldt Range rises high here, dropping off into the Bay of Fyr in its south. This bay surrounds the peninsula upon with the Fyran capital of Dithra stands. In the north, the Fyran border with Cadisia is divided by the Lyre Stream, which feeds into the Savirree River. The Savirree defines Fyra's border with Phraxavaria in the west, though this border is highly permeable despite its neighbor's besst efforts. In recent years, construction of a wall has begun to keep the Phrax within their homeland's borders. This has stifled trade between the two nations and earned the scorn of Fyrans who view the adjacent kingdom as growing increasingly despotic.Resources
Fyra's resources lie primarily in the Grunsfeldt Range. At one time, they heavily mined this region, profitting off of its rare minerals and gems with the help of a semi-private international merchant fleet. These days, Fyra primarily leases the range to the neighboring Commonwealth. It still eagerly purchases the raw goods that are mined so that it can resell them in its established markets, but the rise of Barisea has led to the practice of leasing merchant vessels to the Commonwealth as well, since the Commonwealth is on better terms with those who rule the waves. In the southern region of Fyra, known colloquially as the Charter Lands, industry has begun to thrive. Railroads and mills are a common sight here, with Fyra's rich merchant families investing heavily in their ventures. A Lightning Rail has even been established along the Path, the narrow strip of land between the Grunsfeldt and the Bay of Fyr, which runs through the Wightwoods and connects Reinsfeld to Dithra.Ethnicities
The native humans of Fyra stem from the Skolt family of tribes, though they have been heavily influenced by the varied Althraxian and Gultic cultures around them. Halflings, on the other hand, generally stem from the Ziva cultures - particularly Ziva-Adaxa. Both, however, most closely identify with a distinct and unified Fyran culture in the modern day. Other Zivas, Althraxians, and Gults make up small minorities of peoples in Fyra. Sygultaz, representing various minor tribes from the Border Kingdoms and Commonwealth, are disliked by most within Fyra and regularly expelled, making them an exceptionally minor demographic within its borders.Diplomacy
