Cadisia

History and Government

Cadisia was once the beating heart of the Althraxian Empire. Under the demagogues, its lands were the region's breadbasket, its great generals and peasant levies fueling the ranks of the great imperial army. It was in Cadisia, at the site of its capital of Kathra Var, that the Kingsbane Drake was first slain.   Back then, all of Althraxia considered itself one whole. But in reality, its people were distinct, its culture diverse. This distinction had taken a central role in the empire's politics before the onset of The Dragon Wars, and it is what led to the fractures that became known as the empire's first fall. When the fall came, Cadisia seemed poised to be the next regional power, a history avoided only by the slaying of the drake by Martin the Subjugator, a general of Cadisian blood. It was Martin who binded the Empire back together in spite of its disintegration, and it was Martin who built the grand city of Kathra Var to serve as the Empire's seat - a seat within Cadisian borders.   But the Demagogues' rule did not last. They fell with the return of that foul red drake, and so the empire again descended into fratricide and chaos. Generals took charge of the broken lands and fought each other as much as the dragons, until one stood over the scorched lands of Cadisia: Gallius Felidree. Felidree, today, is widely considered as the father of this nation, though he ruled its lands in the midst of an Althraxia in civil war rather than a Cadisia seeking independence. Two other generals held large swathes of the empire's former territory, and Felidree himself held modern Fyra, encompassing the wider region known historically as Coszabea.   It was Felidree who worked to stabilize Coszabea while battling with the dragons. When they finally fled, it was Coszabea that remained the region's breadbasket, its lands ravaged - but at least partially rebuilt - under his great rule. Some even say that it was Felidree who came to field the great blade Haldun-Kur, until it was torn from his hands in The War of the Sword, though such stories are more myth than history. In any case, the great general had every string of fate upon his side for reforging the empire, but he chose the way of peace instead, ushering in the Era of the Three Republics.   But this era would not bring fortune to the Coszabean lands. Just as the other Border Kingdoms, Cadisia was decimated by the rampage of the Thalgor through its borders as they migrated westward, and its wounds were properly salted by the Beast-Hordes' continuing raids for centuries after. Discontent became the norm among Coszabean nobles and military officers, each believing they could bring glory back to the land, and each causing nothing but further war as they fought to ascend to the nation's top. These struggles eventually left to the separation of Fyra from the kingdom, depriving it of a region rich from trade, and finally forming the modern nation of Cadisia. A nation formed not from the fires of independence or revolution, but from disgrace.   Today, internal strife continues to be the norm in Cadisia's lands. Nominally, absolute power over the nation rests in the Potentate of Kathra Var, but its nobles do as they please. Few recognize the Potentate's authority while many vie for its name; corruption, robbery, and exploitation are rampant. Cadisia is one of the few lands in the world left where the brutalest forms of serfdom still thrive, and while this fact helps maintain its status as the Kcalsbury Continent's breadbasket, it also stirs worries abroad that it might follow in the path of Sylla some day. For now, though, Cadisia is a land where chivalry has died; all that remains are robber barons and peasants who must beg for bread.

Cities

Kathra Var

Kathra Var is the greatest city in Cadisia, the seat of its Potenates and formerly the vacation-home of Althraxia's Demagogues. It's said that the city was built upon the site where Kaszastrix was vanquished, and it both extends from and into the mountains against which it resides. These days, it's rare that Kathra Var isn't under some form of siege or partial occupation, as Cadisia's nobles vie to hold the nation's nominal leadership and the Potentate's power increasingly slips away. Beyond this grim reality, Kathra Var is well-known for the gleaming, silver-white walls which outline the city, built long ago when it stood only as a fortress in the Thurest Heights, though expanded over time. It's also known for its vibrant gardens, and it's said that green fills every gap.

Geography

Much of Cadisia is low-lying plains and flatlands, ideal for farming. The Savirree River once fully defined the borders of Coszabea, but since its split, Cadisia and Fyra have agreed to draw the dividing line at the Lyre Stream. The nobility of south Cadisia has famously made attempts to reroute parts of this strem to increase their farmland, which has resulted in ongoing disputes with the Fyrans.   In the north-east, the Thurest Heights offer protection to Cadisia from neighbors to its east, namely the Protectorate-Commonwealth. It's rare that conflicts comes from that direction, however, and the Commonwealth actively supports the Cadisian military in resisting Thalgor incursions. Ever since the End of the West March Wars, these incursions are typically stopped long before they cross the Savirree, but a vague allegiance still holds strong. Cadisia's borders with the Westerweyhe and Engelsweidt have been an increasing point of contention nonetheless, but the Commonwealth's Emperor has taken no official stance on the matter, making it largely moot since Cadisian nobles have few resources to enforce such claims.   In the north, where the Bastion Peaks rise, conflict has historically arisen with Kol Borihm over rights to resources in the mountains. This conflict has been tamed by the intervention of the Commonwealth ever since the start of The Dead War, who has interests in enlisting both nations to its side, but the imposition of neutrality has brought these nobles towards professing loyalty to Althraxia, blurring the two neighbors' borders.

Resources

The lifeblood of Cadisia is bread. The feudal state supplies much of the Kcalsbury Continent with grain and livestock, bringing in much wealth which is squandered on pointless noble conflicts and displays of decadent prestige. Ore and metal deposits exist on the periphery of the kingdom's mountains, but most of these are either claimed by its neighbors or simply undeveloped.

Ethnicities

The majority of those living in Cadisia today are Ziva-Cadir or Sygultaz, though the south still bears some Fyrskolt and a blend of other Zivas fills in the remaining proportion.
