#08: A Problem Shared
General Summary
Our Heroes confronted Father Lucien Petrovich about the missing Bones of Saint Andral from the Church of St. Andral in Vallaki, but found few leads, learning only that they were stolen anywhere from 2–9 days prior, and cut from their berth. The Father seemed generally crestfallen about the situation, and interpretted their theft as symbolic of the Morninglord complete abandonment, to which Valentina Dilisnya fought back, and chastised him.
Übel Bachmann questioned the Father about the Firebrand, which seemed to unconsciously cause him to mouth the name "Rudolph van Richten," though on further questioning he genuinely did not seem to know what the Heroes were talking about (in relation to the connection between the two, nor him mouthing the name). The Heroes showed the Father the Demon Horn they recovered from the Chapel of St. Indirov, and theorised on a wider conspiracy to desecrate the holy sites of the Dawnic Church in the County of Barovia.
Outside the Church, Mina Barovonna identified a minority population in the town of Elves, believed to be the Amurg people. Afterwards, the Heroes went to the Blue Water Inn where they met Danika Dorakova, her husband Urwin Martikov, and their two sons Bray Martikov and Brom Martikov.
Whilst being served their dinner, Übel noticed Urwin had a particularly "rat-like" twitch to his nose, and became suspicious of him. Soryn d'Nemishcata engaged a fellow Mistborn traveller — one Adrianus Verkleding — in conversation, and heard from them the story of Argynvost and his castle of Argynvostholt.
After dinner and drinks, the Heroes split up for some solo investigation. Whilst Valentina retired early to recover from her indignation earlier, Soryn decided to sneak into the Church and learn more about Father Lucien. Invisible, she witnessed the Father going about his normal evening procedures, and then she examined his work set to fixing the clocktower that had apparently been broken long before Danika was born (in her words). The repairs to the clock appeared to be recent, only in the last two days since the Bones were stolen, and seemed genuine and informed. It appears Father Lucien was once a well-educated metallurgist, and his story checked out.
Mina, on the other hand, attempted to catch the eye of Nikolai Wachter Jnr. and Karl Wachter in the Blue Water Inn, hoping to find married nobles to parade her around town. Unfortunately, both appeared to be rakish bachelors, and therefore unsuitable to present her as a debutante. Karl took an interest in her, but she retired for the evening. Outside, Übel watched from the shadows of Van der Voort's Coffins, Embalmery and Taxidermy as Henrik van der Voort met with an unidentified boatman who was delivering a corpse to the undertaker. Henrik then killed the boatman, and Übel confronted him. The two engaged in a conversation, and made a deal where Henrik would teach Übel Diebmarke in exchange for her "friendship" as a new killer in town.
Our Heroes were woken suddenly the following morning with a crash of fireworks and the beginning of the Festival of the Blazing Sun. Outside, and unknown to them, a rat was watching them and — after transforming into a raven — took flight to elsewhere...
