Chapel of St. Indirov
The Chapel of St. Indirov is a temple to the Morninglord in Barovia, overseen by the custodianship of Father Grigori Donavich. In recent months, the Chapel has served as the meeting place of the Firebrand and their rebels, until they were scattered and the Chapel set to ruins by Strahd von Zarovich.
Architecture
The Chapel of St. Indirov is divided up into two main areas: the Chapel itself, and the Cemetary.
The Chapel
The Chapel is comprised of four rooms: the Main Hall, the Priest Quarters, the Lay Quarters, and the Storage Room.- The Main Hall is a large expansive room, connected to the outside by two doors: the front door, which leads to a hallway and then the Hall itself, and a back door, which is found behind the staircase in the vestibule, which leads to the Cemetary. The walls are all painted stone, showing grand scenes of the Morninglord under layers of black mould, punctuated by stained glass windows (many of them shattered) featuring various Saints. Most of the furniture in here has been shattered recently by Strahd von Zarovich. The stone altar is cracked, with a polished demon horn embedded into its top (placed there by the Firebrand). Behind the altar and in front of the back door is a spiral staircase going up to a gantry belltower, though the bell is long-missing.
- The Priest Quarters are a cramped room off to the left of the hallway, with a bookcase, a table, and a bed. Grigori Donavich and his son Doru Donavich would previously read and eat at the table between other work. The bed is a mess, as Grigori has not been able to sleep properly for days.
- The Lay Quarters are a room off to the right of the hallway, with a small stove, a bed, and a trapdoor down to the Storage Room. This was once the room of Doru Donavich, though he used it seldom, only to cook for his father and to rest.
- The Storage Room underneath the Lay Quarters is a tiny cramped cell where crates and sacks are kept cold and dry. Doru Donavich is currently imprisoned in this room, chained to a wall and thrashing about.
The Cemetary
The Cemetary is a large cordoned off area filled with graves (several hundred, though most headstones have been dug up and reused many times). In the centre of the Cemetary is the cyrpt of Saint Indirov, which contains the embedded grave of the man in the floor. A small shed sits behind the Chapel as well, containing shovels and other tools. The Cemetary is ringed by a low stone and wood fence with a gate leading around the left side.History
The Chapel is named for Saint Indirov, a Zarossian gravedigger who is said to have survived multiple mortal wounds sustained in the process of burying dead soldiers during the Pallor of Barovia. Indirov is said to have even survived these wounds long enough to dig his own grave and bury himself. The grave of the Saint still stands at the centre of the large cemetary that is attached to the Chapel. As such, for those few Barovians who still hold to the worship of the Morninglord, the Chapel is a site of pilgrimmage.
In addition to Saint Indirov's grave, the cemetary of the Chapel is the traditional resting place for Mistborn wanderers who pass into Barovia and perish not long after, unaccustomed as they are to the new land. As such, many of the graves lack names or dates of birth, but merely counts of days spent in the County.
