Morninglord

Morninglord

The Morninglord is an ancient God who was once the chief deity of the state religion of the Kingdom of Zarossia, a large nation that encompassed much of the known world. However, in the millennia since the Kingdom fell, worship of the Morninglord has waned and They're now a minor deity, still worshipped on chief feast days and with minor prayers said to them during dawn services in larger communities.

Though it is known that the Zarossian invasion of County of Barovia brought more worshippers of the Morninglord to the region, it is known that some holy sites — such as the Abbey of St. Markovia — existed before this time. Despite this, some among the Vistani — who actively do not worship the Morninglord — claim the God is a transplant into the region, and worship of Them is not native to it.

Divine Domains

The Morninglord is a God of the Sun and Protection.

Artifacts

The Morninglord's most holy symbol — the Amulet of Dawn, an ancient protective necklace — has been lost for centuries, though is said to resemble a silver and gold solar disc with tongues of flame extending all around it, and a compass rose in its centre. It was originally held in the keeping of the Abbey of St. Markovia, but was lost.

Holy Books & Codes

The main holy text of the Morninglord is the Liber Aurorae, the Book of Dawn, though there are several other volumes Their followers refer to, including the collected works of Saint Andral, known as the Codices Ossi.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Symbols of the Morninglord include sun discs, solar rays, candle flames, and three bells, as well as the colours indigo, pinkish orange, and white.

Tenets of Faith

The Morninglord's worship has the following Edicts:
  • Banish the darkness where it encroaches on the light,
  • Bring hope to those who have none,
  • Let no knowledge languish in obscurity lest it be learned by the unworthy.
The Morninglord also has the following Anathema:
  • Engage in necromancy, and the perversion of the natural order,
  • Destroy knowledge, no matter how profane,
  • Refuse sanctuary to those who honestly seek it.

Holidays

The Morninglord is principally worshipped on holy feast days, one for each of its many saints. Though few observe all such days, most communities practice a ritual meal on a few. The most commonly observed are the Feast of Saint Markovia, the Feast of Saint Andral, and the Feast of Saint Remus. Additionally, prayers are often said to the Morninglord with the first light of dawn, with small services held in Their honour in larger communities.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

Those who still hold the Morninglord in high esteem believe They are responsible for imprisoning ancient evils deep beneath the earth, where neither dawn nor dusk can find them. Such adherents believe their God must still be worshipped in the hopes of keeping those evils at bay. Many theological scholars of the Morninglord believe that the ancient and missing land of Barovia might be the site of the Morninglord's prison for such evils, and may be the source of the fell rumours that persist about that legendary place.
