#03: The Sins of a Father

General Summary

The Heroes went with Ismark Kolyanovich and Ireena Kolyanovich to the Chapel of St. Indirov in the hopes of burying their father, Kolyan Kolyanovich, within its "hallowed" grounds. On the way, they overheard the wailing of a woman, coming from the Aldea House, calling out for her daughter "Gertrude," though they had no time to investigate this. Soryn did, however, find a flier — Say "NU!" to the Golden Gourds! — which had been authored by the Harvest Society, and was later linked to Isabella Lukresh by Ireena.   At the Chapel, the Heroes found the front door nailed shut. Übel Bachmann squeezed through one of the front windows, and created a diversion in the priest's room of the Chapel, to lure Father Grigori Donavich away from the altar in the main hall. The other Heroes, led by Valentina Dilisnya, snuck around the side and entered the main hall, whilst Soryn d'Nemishcata explored the Cemetery.   Valentina and Mina Barovonna talked to the Father whilst Übel and Doru Donavich were making noise and screaming in the front of the Chapel. Eventually, Grigori became convinced that Valentina was a "Living Saint" of the Morninglord, falling to his knees, and seeing her as a way to cure his son.   Outside in the Cemetery, Soryn identified a strange copse of dead trees with repeated axe marks on their trunks, as well as the graves of many previous deceased Mistborn who had found their way here. In a conversation with Gabhar, Soryn became alerted to the possibility of Zombies being a threat in the evening, and she got to digging the Burgomeister's grave.   Ismark and Ireena were able to bring their father around the back of the Chapel, and the rest of the party sans Soryn gathered inside. The group found and identified a Polished Demon Horn which had been embedded in the altar, apparently by the Firebrand, and asked the Father and then Ismark about the figure, learning little. Soryn spent some time teaching Ireena how to clean and care for her gun, and learned of its history, though Ireena identified Soryn as a "witch" and grew fearful of her. Soryn, using her powers, was able to see the happy memory of Ireena claiming her father's gun for herself, and the agency it brings her, though saw an older woman who looked similar to her super-imposed over her features.   That evening, once the grave had been dug and Kolyan had been laid in it, six Zombies rose from their graves as added "guests" for the funeral. They attacked the Heroes, who fought back, and got Ireena and Ismark to safety in the Crypt of Saint Indirov. Several of the Zombies were destroyed outright, but not before Valentina was brought low twice, suffering significant damage. Stolnik Rahadin Temnoye appeared among the copse of dead trees, clearly controlling the Zombies, though seemed to be a relatively passive "participant" in the battle. Still, Soryn shot at him, though he easily dodged the salvo. Incensed by this "impropriety," Rahadin threw the strange red flower bouquet he had brought on Strahd von Zarovich's behalf (the Dread Lord himself being "detained on other business") and swore he would "gut" Soryn for shooting at him. He dissolved the Zombies left standing, and strode off angrily.
