Hannah Humble

Wizard Hannah Wallock

Wizard under Orman Wulk   Hannah Wallock was the daughter of Hiila Wallock, a speller in service to Hannah the Werewolf at Dubraigh, and was raised with the intent of spelling for her. Hannah began running errands for the spellery at five years, and by seven had become one of five apprentices under her namesake.   When Hannah was nine, King Ollaugh (second king under the Rule of Wulk) returned to Dubraigh with his wizard Margget the Wise. By his order, Hannah the Werewolf was dismissed. Four of her apprentices left with her into the Fiirwood, but young Hannah was compelled by her mother to remain at Dubraigh with the new king. Young Hannah may well have felt disloyal, but this decision would benefit her greatly, as Margget immediately relied upon her as her primary assistant. Hannah remained an apprentice and was given the honor of wizard (though not the title) by five-and-twenty.   Margget conferred this honor on six women during her time at Dubraigh. Three of them moved to smaller settlements to serve as wizards in title, but three others remained in service to Margget, among them Hannah. She would spend another eighteen years serving under Margget, whilst all others would eventually move to other settlements. For this, she was called Hannah Humble.   In the final years of Margget's life, Hannah had essentially taken all of her responsibilities. Margget the Wise died of a chill in 769 RA, and her mantle passed to Hannah. Some would criticize this decision: Hannah was well practiced at obeying, but less so at making her own decisions. Margget had a fiercely martial mind in her youth, with a sharp acumen for governance. She was merciless to her foes and allies alike, though warm with her truest friends. Hannah, meanwhile, lacked any drive for battle and was said to be far too kind to those with whom she treated.   This was very early into the reign of King Orman, the third (and final) Western King. Both were uncomfortable in their roles. Nor were they given time to acclimate. Shortly after Hannah's entitlement, rumors began to circulate that King Orman was a bastard. The Wulks were accustomed to multiple wives, in the old Western fashion, and although King Ollaugh had one wife and to all appearances was faithful, his death opened the gates for hearsay. Orman raged at this, and Hannah knew not how to counter it.   Things only worsened in 772 RA, when more dangerous rumors began. The True King was returning, they said, amassing a navy off the eastern coast. A grandchild of Griin the Firebrand was gathering troops at an island off the southeast coast. Long before a response could be mustered, ships attacked Aerwoth and took the castle. King Orman was able to send small skirmishes to harry the approaching forces, but gathering a true army would take nearly a full year. The war that would come to be known as Garland's Conquest ended on the western banks of the River Nightfall. The Wulks were destroyed, and Clan Ainros returned to power.   Garland Ainros never came to Dubraigh, yet the Wulks' greatest supporters knew what was coming. By the time Mox Aormek Luutar came with an army to settle Dubraigh, many had fled. Orman's Mox Master Dullan Eskmai stood against a siege for a month before handing over the castle. Every speller had left, even Hannah's apprentices, yet Hannah remained. The Luutars seized the castle, and while Dullan and Clan Eskmai remained to serve as vassal clans, Mox Aormek would not allow wizards of doubtful loyalty. Hannah was condemned to death. Dullan Eskmai spoke on her behalf, and Luutar showed mercy by having her beheaded.
