Kalan

Kalan is a region of Murkys. Kalan is a somber and haunting region of Murkys, draped in eternal twilight. Its dense forests, called the Dirgewood, stretch endlessly, shrouded in mists that devour not only the body but the soul. Once a land of mystical beauty and cultural brilliance, Kalan has become a realm of despair, where regrets linger as tangible forces, and the spirits of the dead outnumber the living.   Kalan was known for its artistry, music, and spiritual reverence. The region’s people were devout followers of Borea Galebreath, Ancient Natural Spirit of the woodland, song and memory, believing that their lives were measured by how deeply they honored their past and learned from their mistakes. The great city of Dravenhall, often called the City of Choirs, was the heart of Kalan, famed for its ethereal music and harmonious connection to the natural spirits. The people of Kalan sought to preserve the memories of the dead, creating vast mausoleums and ritual groves within the Dirgewood, where they communed with the spirits of their ancestors. However, this devotion to remembrance had a darker side. Those who lived in Kalan often obsessed over their past failures and sins, becoming consumed by their regrets. This spiritual vulnerability left the region susceptible to the curse’s corrupting power.   When the Curse of the Mortal Sword spread across Murkys, Kalan’s connection to memory and the spirit world became its downfall. The mists that rolled in from the Dirgewood were infused with the curse, transforming into soul-devouring vapors. These mists enveloped the entire region, corrupting its people and forest alike. The spirits of the dead, once peaceful and protective, became ravenous predators, feasting on the souls of the living.   Kalan’s curse manifests as a form of eternal regret, where those caught in the mist are forced to relive their greatest failures. The mist strips away the soul’s essence, leaving behind empty husks that wander the woods as Mistbound, spectral figures who are neither alive nor fully dead. The living who survive in Kalan are few, and they do so only by isolating themselves or hiding within sacred wards that temporarily repel the mists. Some say that the region has merged with a section of The Ethereal Plane, but it has so far been unverifiable.
