Thunderbird

Description

Across darkened skies and atop forlorn mountain peaks there lives the mighty Thunderbird. Deities in their own right these beings have held rule over their lands for millennia. Being born from the fire and stone that formed their kingdoms they live to ever defend their homes. Capable of controlling atmospheric conditions within a roughly 10 kilometre radius allows these mighty raptors to come from the clouds with true shock and awe.

Morphology

From a great distance one would most likely not recognise any anomalous features of a Thunderbird. Put simply, Thunderbirds resemble humongous versions of non anomalous Birds of Prey. Most commonly Thunderbirds will resemble common Birds of Prey, though now immense with many instances standing 8 metres tall with a 16 metre wingspan. Expectedly Thunderbirds often weigh around 100 kilograms in weight, this would lead one to believe that these creatures could not possibly fly, though of course they do. Be it by magic or strength alone the Thunderbirds spread their wings to take flight, often the force of this alone will cause a static discharge leaving bolts of arcane electricity trailing behind the mighty being.   Though all Thunderbirds resemble a bird of prey the variation among the species is staggering. Depending on where the Thunderbird resides will determine the appearance which it holds. The form of a Thunderbird can furthermore be affected by Arcane influence from different dimensions, deities, and worship. This is seen no more chiefly than in Thunderbirds that pay service to the Goddess Alexandria, which appear exclusively as Owls. Though the vast majority often appear as Hawks, Eagles, and Falcons giving them unparalleled combat power. Much like their non anomalous progenitors Thunderbirds make use of their keen eyesight and powerful talons to swoop down upon their prey, seizing the poor creature before swiftly flying it home to feast. This physical power alone makes Thunderbirds a formidable creature, though with their Arcane prowess they become truly godlike.   The body of a Thunderbird is covered in muscle, making all of their movements incredibly powerful and swift. Though their size makes them comparatively sluggish they are in no way slow, being able to strike at one with sudden speed. Furthermore Thunderbirds are always covered in feathers, which shouldn’t be a surprise all things considered. Though what is remarkable about these feathers is their durability and battery like qualities. Though not bulletproof, Thunderbirds feathers are able to dampen the majority of small arms fire and melee attacks. Furthermore the feathers brim with Arcane power resembling small bolts of electricity. This gives Thunderbirds an ominous shimmering iridescence, often coloured to compliment their preferred form.   For the most part Thunderbirds feathers are shades of Brown and Tan though certain sup species have more exuberant feather coloration. Often the feather coloration of Thunderbirds will mimic a non anomalous species, albeit with an added arcane iridescence. Another striking feature of Thunderbirds is of course their great talons and beaks, these instruments of death are terrifying to behold and capable of dispatching even the strongest of prey. Comparisons have been drawn to titanium or steel in terms of overall durability as there exists many instances of Thunderbirds tearing their way through wooden structures, stone walls, and even Armoured vehicles.   Another imposing feature is of course the eyes of the Thunderbird, often golden in Color they are capable of seeing for miles. Thunderbirds eyes are often large and for the most part resemble the eyes of their non anomalous counterparts. Though a striking feature is seen in the form of what appears to be a persistent storm. When one looks into the eyes of a Thunderbird they will see a brewing storm, almost as if it were being reflected in the eyes' glassy finish. This is a common sign of large amounts of arcane power within an entity. Internally the Thunderbird shows no anomalies, with mechanics that would be expected of an avian of smaller size present. Of course all of these organs are far larger in instances of Thunderbird as a posed to non anomalous species. It should be noted that a Thunderbird can take up to 4 months to digest consumed prey. Many instances have been found to hold undigested or partly digested prey within their stomachs.

Growth and Creation

Thunderbirds are birthed from Thunderbird eggs, solid mineral soul anchors found within the centre of mountains. Through absorption of background arcana these eggs will; after a millennia, birth a Thunderbird. This is done once the egg has reached its peak level of Arcane absorption. This is often achieved during storms, as lightning repeatedly strikes the peak of the mountain such an egg lies beneath. Much like an arcane funnel these mountains direct the massive amount of arcane energy to the thunderbird egg within their centre. This takes thousands of years, with hundreds of Thunderbird eggs being theorised to lie dormant beneath mountains across the world. For the most part upon their birth Thunderbirds will take a name or title in relation to the mountain that they were birthed from.   Thunderbirds will be born larger than the size of a fully grown adult of their non anomalous counterpart. Though their size is far smaller than a fully grown instance, new born instances are recorded having a wingspan of roughly 7 metre wingspan. This will often be the maximum wingspan of a Thunderbird for roughly 2500 years at which point they shall begin to grow exponentially. During this juvenile period Thunderbirds will be unable to use much of their greater abilities, being limited to only minor forms of Atmospheric Manipulation. This does not subtract from their power as they are blessed with Arcane power from birth, furthermore being born with their full intelligence and sentience.   During Adolescence (2500 years - 8500 years) Thunderbirds will begin to grow exponentially, with their wingspan increasing by roughly 8cm a year. During this period Thunderbirds will quickly grow to their full physical size and weight. Though it takes far longer for Thunderbirds to develop mastery of their Arcane powers to an effective level. This is usually mastered around 8500 years of age though frequently it can take far longer based on environmental stimuli. It should also be noted that during this Adolescence that Thunderbirds require substantially more food, around 52 kilograms a year, though this is still only a poultry amount considering their size. It should also be noted that some subspecies of Thunderbird only develop their Arcane abilities at the 7000 years of age. Others such as the North American Thunderbird develop their Arcane powers around only 2500 years of age.   Thunderbirds take millennia to grow to their full size though seem to max out around 102 kg in weight with around a 16 metre wingspan. It is for this reason that the vast majority of Thunderbirds in existence are already thousands upon thousands of years old. With only a limited number of adolescent or infant instances known to the Albion Archive, most of which now reside within the Preserve. It should be noted that there does not seem to be any maximum age for Thunderbirds, with some instances professing to be millions of years old. The most ancient Thunderbirds are some of the most powerful anomalous entities known to Albion Archive. Although the Arcane power of a Thunderbird does stop increasing around 10000 years old, the skill in which they wield such power is ever improving.

Death and Regeneration

Though it is uncommon for a Thunderbird to fall, if they do, their remains shall not be left to rot like one may expect. Instead an instance of a Thunder Vulture will appear and land upon its fallen kin. The Thunder Vulture shall then begin to consume the remains of the deceased Thunderbird until nothing remains. This has the dual purpose of denying mortals the ability to desecrate the fallen Thunderbird as well as ferrying its soul to the realm of Anima. When consumed the Thunderbirds soul shall be retained within the form of the Thunder Vulture, which will then proceed to travel home to the realm of anima. Upon arrival into the realm of Anima the Thunder Vulture will regurgitate the remains of their fallen kin along with their soul. The Thunderbird soul is then free to travel the realm of Anima as they wish. Some have considered that perhaps a Thunderbird soul has the ability to re-enter our Mortal realm in order to be retained within a dormant Thunderbird Egg. Unfortunately this has never been directly witnessed by any verified personnel.

Thunder Eggs

Thunderbird Eggs are the primary catalyst for a Thunderbirds creation, though it should be noted that no one knows how they are exactly formed. It is suggested that perhaps certain arcane elements undergo an alchemical process which creates a Thunderbird Egg during a Mountains initial formation. This has been further tested as analysis of Thunder Egg specimens has revealed that they are indeed solid minerals. It appears as if these solid Eggs act more as a Soul Anchor than a literal egg. This theory is furthered by the ritual of naming a mountain whilst at its peak seemingly confirms this.   The majority of Thunder Eggs resemble large avian eggs, often these eggs are roughly 1.5 feet tall , with a widest width of 1 foot. It has been noted however that on average these Eggs weigh roughly 500 kilograms, a shocking weight for their size. Thunder Eggs come in a variety of shadings and hues, with the vast majority of the Color being dependent on the Subspecies of Thunderbird that shall emerge from it. Most commonly Thunder Eggs have a Brown or Tan hue, enhanced by streaks of arcane blue. Thunder Eggs are also incredibly smooth to the touch, many have compared the texture to marble.   The majority of the Egg is made of stone, this stone seems to vary wholly dependent on the mineral composition of the mountain. Small amounts of metal have been found within Thunder Eggs, though the materials have seemingly no arcane properties when deconstructed. The Metal content of a Thunder Egg is what creates the glowing arcane veins across the surface. Through testing it has been discovered that as long as a Thunder Egg is mostly intact it shall act as an Arcane Magnet. This allows Thunder Eggs to absorb and draw in nearby Arcane Energy as well as common electricity. These properties can cause damage to equipment as well as cause danger to nearby Thaumaturge.

Thunder Feathers

Much like the Egg of a Thunderbird the feathers are also imbued with anomalous qualities. First and foremost of which is their extraordinary durability, which some have likened to aluminium in strength. Though this does not offer any great resistance against modern weaponry alone when combined into a chain mail like system of feathers they do offer a modicum of resistance. The real power of a Thunder Feather comes in their Arcane Battery properties. Arcane energy is absorbed into the feather, making Thunderbirds and their feathers completely immune from direct arcane attacks. The Arcane Energy stored within Thunder Feathers reacts when struck, producing a considerable discharge of energy. Though this is not enough to kill a man it is enough to produce a deal of resistance. When multiple feathers are struck simultaneously the produced force is amplified. This force is enough (when as part of a Thunderbirds form) to deflect low calibre projectiles entirely. Acting as a sort of arcane reactive armour as well as a passive ‘hedgehog’ defence system.   In appearance Thunder Feathers are coloured based on the sub species from which they were removed. Most often these feathers are brown or tan, it has been noted by researchers however that certain sub species feathers produce wildly different effects. Though it should be stated that the variety of these effects is mostly different flavours of arcane energy. In most instances this is simply a change of Colour based on the plumage of the Thunderbird. It has also been noted however that certain Thunder Feathers taken from different parts of the body produce stronger effects.

Abilities

Most chiefly it should be stated that even without their Arcane Gifts Thunderbirds are a force to be reckoned with. Their large muscular frames allow them to annihilate any prey it so wishes. This is combined with its prowess in the air as well as its keen vision, allowing a Thunderbird to soar above the clouds, and then drop down to earth to seize its ambushed prey. Though strength is not a Thunderbirds only weapon as their bodies coarse with Arcane power.

Atmospheric Manipulation

Thunderbirds are capable of Atmospheric Manipulation, allowing them to change weather, cloud movements, ambient air temperature, and even create lighting or rain with merely the flap of their wings. These effects can be directed, allowing a Thunderbird to throw lightning and strong gales at their prey. Most often these abilities are used as shock and awe in order to scare off any would be combatants. Thunderbirds also regularly use their Arcane gifts to make their environment more suitable or in order to expel negative emotions. It is not uncommon to find a blizzard swept mountain top with a gravely upset Thunderbird at its peak.   It should be noted that Atmospheric Manipulation on the scale used by Thunderbirds can damage electrical equipment. Such effects can also cause issues with magnetic equipment such as compasses. It should also be noted that Thunderbirds are not capable of ‘creating weather’ but are only capable of manipulating current conditions.

Intelligence and Communication

One may be surprised to learn that Thunderbirds share an intelligence equal or above that of a Mortal Human. This mostly comes with their long lived nature as many Thunderbirds have been around since the dawn of our planet. Shockingly though Thunderbirds are also capable of speech, being able to communicate in almost every known mortal language. It is unknown as to how the Thunderbird achieves this as it has no biology to service such speech. Many Academics have Theorised that perhaps Thunderbirds use minor manipulation of the Atmosphere in order to create ‘speech’ within their own throats, in order to give the impression of ‘talking’. Though this talking often sounds far more like a deep whisper, echoing and reverberating off of any stone in the area. In some instances it may even sound as if the entire mountain is speaking.   It should be noted that this intelligence does make Thunderbirds far more dangerous than if they were simply just brutal beasts. Simple tool use as well as the laying of traps has been observed, along with their ability to create a roost or nest to reside within.   Thunderbirds are also capable of making vocalisations expected of their non anomalous counterparts. This can vary depending on subspecies though is almost always what one would expect from an avian of gigantic size.

Physical Power

Unsurprisingly given their size Thunderbirds are incredibly proficient in close quarters combat. Their Talons and Beak alone are capable of easily annihilating any mortal prey it may come across. It should also be noted that there have been instances of Thunderbirds being able to rip steel apart using its Beak. Though strength and size allows Thunderbirds to effectively glide when in the air they are not naturally capable of flying under their own power, or in fact even standing at all. It is only through Arcane manipulation that these feats are achieved. Though this arcane manipulation does not decrease the mass of a Thunderbird, meaning that in most circumstances simply landing upon their prey is enough.   Furthermore using their wings (along with some Atmospheric Manipulation) Thunderbirds are able to produce a great amount of wind force. Often the force of a Thunderbird simply launching itself into the sky is enough to send any objects under 65 kilograms flying with considerable force. Often in the act of taking to the skies a Thunderbirds wind tips will reach speeds fast enough to break the sound barrier. Not unlike a whip this will cause an extremely loud cracking sound, similar to that of a loud firecracker.

Flying Ability

The Ability for a Thunderbird to fly is miraculous within itself, given their weight and size no matter its muscles or wings it should be bound to the ground. Though the means in which a Thunderbird achieves flight is impressive. As stated previously their physical structure and muscle allows Thunderbird to effectively glide. By using its wings out spread and using atmospheric manipulation to produce a pocket of warm air beneath themselves Thunderbirds can ‘fly’ with little to no effort. One will notice that before a Thunderbird takes to the air the local air pressure will rapidly rise, along with this comes a large build up of static electricity. This will be discharged as soon as the Thunderbird ascends to the sky. Often the static discharge caused by this will be enough to instantly damage any electrical device nearby.   Furthermore this effect persists whilst a Thunderbird is in flight. Depending on atmospheric conditions this can sometimes leave coursing bolts of lightning behind the Thunderbird. Along with this comes a sound of rolling thunder, as the mighty Demi gods of the sky manipulate the atmosphere beneath their own wings. Truly a sight to behold, though one should be wary of flying any Aircraft too close to a Thunderbird. It is not uncommon for light aircraft to be damaged simply by flying too close to a Thunderbird. Small non anomalous Bird Species can too be affected by this phenomena, causing them to seize or die in mid air, causing entire passing flocks to fall to Earth.

Behaviour and Psychology

Thunderbirds are first and foremost solitary creatures, rarely leaving the comfort of their lonely mountain homes. It is for this reason that seeing a Thunderbird is considered to be an Omen in many cultures. Mostly Thunderbirds patrol their local mountain peak, only venturing further to find food or materials. This isolationist lifestyle is seen no more than when Humans stray to close. In the vast majority of instances if a Human strays too close to a Thunderbirds home they will be soon warded off by fowl weather and ominous storms. Though for some who persist they may encounter the Thunderbird directly, surely leading to a swift retreat from any mountain expedition.   Thunderbirds rarely actually physically assault humans, as many of their kind view us Mortals as their distant children. This leads many Thunderbirds to be almost parental in their role as king of the mountain. In many instances local Thunderbirds have brought noble villages fair weather and blessed rains. There is little consensus on why some Thunderbirds display this strange behaviour other than that some are simply charitable beings.   Thunderbirds rarely encounter one another, with instances often coming into conflict when residing too close to one another. This has in the past led to certain mountain sides to become inhospitable due to constant foul weather. Though violence is only ever used as a final resort two Thunderbirds could unintentionally wreak havoc upon their own mountains whilst trying to intimidate one another. If two Thunderbirds were to fight it may cause irreversible damage to the entire surrounding area.   Though Thunderbirds have been known to on occasion allow certain Humans to reach their home in order to converse. The reasons for Thunderbirds doing this vary greatly, some are wishing to impart wisdom, other foretell foul omens, some simply to have a conversation out of boredom. No matter the reason it is considered a Hero’s honour to be allowed to a Thunderbirds peak to converse. Thus a Thunderbird demands respect, as any mortal man that would dare insult such a powerful being would be foolish at best. It should be noted that in the rare cases in which Thunderbirds become aggressive or predatory they often employ ritualistic behaviour. Instead of simply preying upon mortal humans as if we were put animals Thunderbirds will instead employ bizarre hunting rituals. This can range from taking only specific types of mortal humans much like a serial killer or enacting some kind of rite of punishment for perceived transgression

Guardians of the Great Lakes Portals

Many Thunderbirds have existed for centuries and thus have a long and complexly intertwined history with many cultures and anomalies. No other is as prevalent as the Thunderbirds of North America and their guardianship of some of the most dangerous portals known to the world. These are of course the Great Lake portals, Portal Superior, Michigan Portal, Huron Portal, The Erie Portal, and Otario Portal. So named after the lakes in which they reside. These Portals are some of the weakest points between the Mortal Realm and its mirrors.   It's no surprise to learn that many denizens of aggressive realms have attempted to use these portals to crack through the veil of realms in order to conquer our mortal home. Many have fought over these Portals though fortunately in modern times these portals have been rendered almost entirely inactive, thanks to both Thunderbird and Human intervention. Though in the times long before Europeans arrived upon the shores of North America these portals were wildly active, as were most back in what is termed the Mythic Era. Many indigenous peoples from the Great Lake regions still hold myths, legends, and stories that are handed down from these ancient times.   During the Mythic Era Thunderbirds acted as the guardians of these Great Lake Portals. Defending the world from near constant invasions from Fomorians and Horned Serpents. Many wars between Thunderbirds and these invaders, which fortunately all ended in victory for our realm. This guardian status of the Great Lakes still persists to this day and many Thunderbirds native to the region have in fact defended it for millennia. It is for this reason that when dealing with certain incursions in the Great Lakes regions Anomalous Security Agencies are recommended to request assistance from local Thunderbirds.   Given the historic nature of this region for the Thunderbirds it is no surprise that the majority of sightings and incidents involving Thunderbirds in the modern day take place around the Great Lakes. Similar guardianships are seen across the world with Thunderbirds acting as protectors of many of our realms weakest points.   Though Thunderbirds are regularly solitary creatures on occasion, multiple instances may form a small group. Often this is an Ancient Thunderbird caring for younger, weak, or injured Thunderbird instances. In such cases Thunderbird roosts may contain multiple instances of Thunderbirds. Under rare circumstances Thunderbirds may form a War Flight in order to deal with a great incursion through a guarded portal. Such occurrences are incredibly rare in the modern day, though in the ancient times these War Flights were a regular sight.

Habitat & Diet

Most Thunderbirds live where they were born, upon the rocky mountain peaks of the great ranges across the Mortal Plane. There was once a time where almost every mountain peak across our planet held a mighty Thunderbird. Though in the modern day with encroaching human populations and infrastructure many have had to be moved to the Preserve.   Naturally Thunderbirds reside almost exclusively atop their mountains, only leaving in order to ward off intruders or catch prey. Often the prey Thunderbirds catch is native mountain fauna. Prey animals such as Deer, Goats, and Cows are prime targets for Thunderbirds. Though in times of famine Thunderbirds have been known to prey on predators such as Wolves or Bears. Though their size would lead one to believe that a Thunderbird requires large amounts of food they are able to sustain themselves off of poultry amounts of food. On average many Thunderbirds are capable of surviving by eating as little as 100 kilograms of meat over the course of a year. This has allowed Thunderbirds to remain almost entirely hidden, only needing to leave their homes to hunt every few centuries.   It should be noted that Thunderbirds will always take their prey back to their roost. Furthermore a Thunderbird will always consume any prey or combatant that it slays, leaving almost no trace of said prey's existence.   Thunderbirds are also a fixture of the anomaly known as Mount Winnebago, a flying mountain that once hovered over the location of the modern day Fort McCoy, Wisconsin. This is considered to be the home, headquarters, and royal court of Thunderbirds, especially those that reside within North America. Mount Winnebago was created as a fortress by an Ancient order of Thunderbirds that guarded the world from Fomorian and Draconic incursions. Mount Winnebago, also known as the Winnebago Fortress, was the largest of these flying mountains and served as the primary meeting point for Thunderbirds defending the Great Lakes. Though it no longer lingers in the sky above For McCoy it has from time to time broken back through into our plain of reality.

Combat & Containment

Fortunately Thunderbirds rarely stoop to a level of violence, choosing to instead scare off any intruders. Though there have been instances in the past in which Thunderbirds for whatever reason have gone rogue. In times gone by, a Thunderbird would have been almost entirely impossible to stop. Though with the advent of modern firearms such times have been put long behind us. Unfortunately for these mighty creatures with modern counter aircraft measures along with long range ballistic weaponry we are able to easily terminate any aggressive Thunderbird instance.   Though of course this requires a regimented response upon encountering an aggressive Thunderbird which for most Anomalous Security Personnel will not be the case. If one were to encounter an Aggressive Thunderbird the first and foremost goal is to rapidly leave the area. This is of course far easier said than done as if a Thunderbird has taken a disliking to your presence the weather will soon turn foul. In which case one should immediately seek cover in dense woodland or caverns. If one were left exposed in open ground a Thunderbird may be likely to swoop down in a deadly ambush. Attempting to hide within vehicles or buildings typically found where Thunderbirds reside is considered futile. If weather does not batter your cover down then the Thunderbird may attempt to remove you from your cover itself.   The cover of dense woodland and solid stone is superior in all respects as Thunderbirds become powerless to approach or strike at their prey with lightning. This can be beneficial but will surely lead to a prolonged Siege by the Thunderbird. If caught, one must attempt all methods to signal local Anomalous Security Forces in order for rescue. Fortunately if one is able to swiftly leave the Thunderbirds territory they shall be left safe from further attacks. Being incredibly territorial a Thunderbird will be hard pressed to find a good reason to leave their land in one's pursuit.   If possible Anomalous Security Personnel should always attempt to subdue the Thunderbird using high dosage anaesthetics. This is in order to hopefully rehome any aggressive Thunderbird to the preserve away from humans. This is of course far easier said than done, Anomalous Security Personnel should always attempt to reason with the Thunderbird before attempting forceful eviction. Fortunately Thunderbirds for the most part are self containing entities, staying away from and avoiding humans in order to remain unbothered by our presence.

Subspecies and Variants

Thunderbirds are a widespread form of entity being found across the globe. There are also a number of unique and rare variants of Thunderbirds that have been encountered.
  • Common Thunderbird - Unsurprising to learn is that the Common Thunderbird is by far the most wide spread of any Thunder Eagle SubSpecies. Though this should in no way detract from their awesome power. Resembling the Non Anomalous Golden Eagle in all but size these mighty creatures have appeared across multiple cultures folklore and mythology.
  •
  • North American Thunderbird - Also known as the Thunder Eagle, the North American Thunderbird is the mightiest of all subspecies. Being substantially larger than their cousins with a wing span of roughly 20 metres these mighty beings rule the mountains of North America. Though once they roamed the skies of the great American mountain ranges in modern times their populations have drastically declined. So enigmatic and majestic were the North American Thunderbirds that their influence as an entity has been felt across Indigenous North American Cultures.
  •
  • Atlantic Thunderbird - Also known as a Great Osprey or Poseidon Bird are the second most common subspecies of Thunderbird. Found across the globe these mighty kings of the water resemble the non anomalous Osprey in appearance, though of course far larger. Found atop mountains that overlook great bodies of water these Great Ospreys are capable of some truly terrific feats of Atmospheric Manipulation.
  •
  • Thunder Harrier - Thunder Harriers are a widespread species of Thunderbird that can be found on every continent except for Antarctica. Unsurprisingly Thunder Harriers resemble various species of non anomalous Harriers. This gives Thunder Harriers are wide array of different plumage colours such as grey, white, brown, tan, orange, and gold. Physically Thunder Harriers are slightly smaller than their cousins and far more slender. This smaller size and frame are more than made up for however as Thunder Harriers are capable of reaching unprecedented speeds.
  •
  • East Asian Thunderbird - Found only in the Eastern reaches of the Asian continent these Thunderbirds are some of the rarest to encounter. Resembling a pacific sea eagle in colouration and having a wingspan of roughly 18 metres on average makes these Thunderbirds an imposing sight. Tales tell of the mythic era in which these Thunderbirds ruled all of the Eastern world.
  •
  • Persian Rokh - Enormous in size and well known in Arabian Legends the Saharan Rokh stands as the Middle East’s resident Thunderbird subspecies. These mighty lords of the sky watch over their great lands like the kings of Persia which once hunted them. Predominantly resembling a Steppe Eagle these mighty lords of the sky dwell across North Africa and SouthWest Asia.
  •
  • African Thunderbird - Found only in sub Saharan Africa this sub species most closely resembles a secretary bird in general appearance. Towering over its cousins the African Thunderbird struts its home as if it were a king. African Thunderbirds are the continent's resident avian kings of the sky.
  •
  • Oceanic Thunderbird - The Oceanic Thunderbird has long been spotted by merchantmen and navy crews travelling North of Australia. Oceanic Thunderbirds are found across the litany of islands between Australia and the Asian continent.
  •
  • Amazonian Thunderbird -Rare even in their native lands these majestic Thunderbirds are most likened to a Bird of Paradise. Sporting an array of bright and colourful feathers these entities are one of rarest sights to witness on our mortal plane. Along with their dazzling colours comes brightly coloured arcana and streaks on energy as they soar above the rarely flown skies of the Amazon. .
  •
  • Patagonian Thunderbird - The largest of the Thunderbird sub species in South America and perhaps one of the most enigmatic of all is the Patagonian Thunderbird. Resembling the non anomalous King Vulture these Thunderbirds are one of the most dangerous of the subspecies.
  •
  • Arctic Thunderbird - Arctic Thunderbirds are considered to be one of the most dangerous of all Thunderbird Species. Dwelling on the coasts of the high Arctic these mighty falcons carry with them an unending blizzard capable of dazing even the most stoic of explorers. Though rarely seen, many have been harrowed by the shrieking calls of an Arctic Thunderbird whilst in a thick blizzard.
  •
  • Siberian Thunder Crane - One of the most regal subspecies of all is the Siberian Thunder Crane. With their long necks of pure white they elegantly watch across their lands. Though they lay claim to mountains they can be far more often found in shallow marshlands across North East Asia.
  •
  • Himalayan Thunder Buzzard - Comparable in size to their North American cousins these mighty Thunder Buzzards rule over the Himalayan mountain range. Colossal in size and truly ancient, these mighty creatures are rarely seen and have been responsible for many failed mountain expeditions.
  •
  • Thunder Loon - Strongly resembling a Northern Water Diver or Common Loon the deadly Thunder Loon is one of the rarer subspecies of Thunderbird. Capable of using their Atmospheric Manipulation in order to cause hallucinations Thunder Loons are considered highly dangerous.
  •
  • Alexandrian Thunderbird - These mighty Thunderbirds have pledged their service to the Goddess of the library Alexandria. Their forms now bended by Alexandrian magic, these Thunderbirds are used as enforcers as librarians by their master.
  •
  • Thunder Owl - One of the rarest anomalous entities to encounter is the Thunder Owl. Enormous in size and capable of staggering feats of magic these creatures are considered terrifying to most. Often Thunder Owls are seen as book keepers or teachers, summoning those extremely gifted in the arcane arts to impart some wisdom.
  •
  • Thunder Vulture - Even great beasts such as Thunderbirds die, when they do their mortal form is visited by a Thunder Vulture. These monstrous birds come to collect and consume the remains of any fallen Thunderbird, retiring their soul to another plane. To see one of these creatures is to see the death of a demigod.
  •
  • Phantom Thunderbird - Ethereal and glowing ghostly visages of Thunderbirds have been spotted time and time again by mariners travelling across our realms oceans. Disembodied and lost, the souls of these unfortunate Thunderbirds are forced to roam our realm forever in search of their way to the afterlife. .

    Myths, Legends and Incidents

With Thunderbirds being as Ancient and Powerful as they are it's no wonder to see them appearing across separate cultures, folklore, Myths, and Legends. On occasion Thunderbirds are still sighted by civilians today, leading to ever more hilarious theories as to their true nature. Fortunately many verified incidents have been entirely discredited thanks to standardised information suppression. It should be noted that many Thunderbird species are revered as deities in their own right. Following is a compiled list of Myths, Legends, and Incidents in which Thunderbirds have appeared.

    Myths and Cultural Impact

    Algonquin Tradition
The Thunderbird is highly prevalent among the Algonquin peoples of North Eastern America. In Algonquin Folklore the Thunderbird is considered to be a celestial deity and ruler of the upper world. It is said that the Thunderbird fights against the dark creatures that infest our world. Most importantly the Thunderbird is seen fighting against the Great Horned Serpent and the Underwater Panther. Two entities that have now been discerned to be a Sky Serpent and a Lake Drake respectively.   In Algonquin Iconography the Thunderbird is depicted regularly with its head facing forwards and its wings outstretched toward the sky. Most commonly this is drawn as a simple symbol presented as an X.
    Ojibwe Tradition
In Ojibwe Tradition it is believed that the Thunderbird(s) was created by the Great trickster spirit Nanabozho for the purpose of fighting malevolent underwater spirits. They are also used to uphold moral values, with instances being said to punish those who break perceived social codes. The Ojibwe knew of the widespread nature of Thunderbirds, with tales telling of such entities living in all four directions. It is from Ojibwe stories that we gain insight into Thunderbird Migration, with tales telling of Thunderbirds returning in spring time along with other birds. It is further said that Thunderbirds migrate south at the end of Fall.
    Menominee Tradition
In the Tradition of the Menominee Thunderbirds dwell upon the slopes of a great flying mountain in the western sky. Much of the Thunderbirds anomalous abilities were well known. It was believed once more that the Thunderbirds did battle against malevolent entities, chief among all was the great horned snakes. It was also told that Thunderbirds were both great warriors and messengers for the Great Sun.
    Siouan Tradition
Symbolism, Iconography, and Stories of Thunderbirds also appear throughout Siouan tradition.
    Ho-Chunk Tradition
It is stated that if a man sees a vision of a Thunderbird whilst undertaking a solitary fast is destined to become a War Chief of their people.
    Arikara Tradition
A tale from the Arikara tells of a young boy that comes across a Thunderbird that warns him of a two headed serpent that comes at night to consume her young. This tale is known as ‘The Boy who Befriended Thunderbirds and the Serpent’.
    Arabic Tradition
In Arabic Tradition and tales the Thunderbird is often referred to as the Rokh, with the mighty creature being looked on in fear and awe alike. Notably instances of Thunderbird appear in tales from 1001 nights as well as having a legendary instance noted within the Wonders of Creation.
    European Tradition
Thunderbirds have been looked on as wise and ancient beings in many European folktales and myths. Notably two instances appear in the tales of The Owl of Cwm Cowlyd and the Oldest Animals in the World.
    Eastern European Tradition
In Eastern Europe may view the Thunderbird with fear, telling tales of how they prey upon mortals with ease. Though with this fear comes great admiration, the Thunderbird is the inspiration for many of the region's heraldic imagery.
    Tinguian Tradition
The Tinguian peoples of the Philippines tell tales of the Banog, a great bird that roosts in the highest trees and atop mountains. It is said that the Banog snatches unwitting humans, carrying them off to a nest full of hungry chicks. This behaviour is expected for certain Thunderbird sub species in the region.

    Incidents involving Thunderbirds

Thunderbirds have been regularly encountered by both civilians and Anomalous Security Personnel alike. This has led to a large collection of incidents involving sightings, encounters, and engagements with various Thunderbird instances.
  • Incident US-AL-2018.01.00-0 (Alaskan Thunderbird Sighting)
  •
  • Incident US-PA-2001.06.13-0 (Greenville Thunderbird Sighting)
  •

    Legendary & Famous Instances

Thunderbirds are simple but hard to miss, it is for this reason that certain instances have been sighted and spoken of time and time again. Be they legendary sky gods or supposed cryptids these Thunderbirds have had their names given to them. Following is a compiled list of known Thunderbird unique or legendary instances.
  • Boobrie - A legendary Patagonian Thunderbird originally encountered on the west coast of the Scottish Highlands. It is unknown as to how or why Boobrie came to reside so far from their home though it is known that they are highly aggressive. Many have mistaken the powers of Boobrie to be that of a shapeshifter, though many such accounts have been mistaken and exaggerated after years of tall tales.
  •
  • Eagle of Gwern Abwy - Said to be one of the oldest living creatures, this ancient Thunderbird is said to reside somewhere in Wales atop a large rock. The Eagle of Gwern Abbwy acts as a noble guiding being in the story of Culhwch and Olwen. In this story the Eagle leads the protagonists to other ancient beings to assist in a quest given by the legendary King Arthur.
  •
  • The Eagle of Gwernabwym - This mighty eagle is said to have dwelled upon our mortal plane for millennia. Watching the earth shift and change around them he and his wife watched over the early denizens of our realm. Though now widowed and lonely, The Eagle of Gwernabwym now searches for a suitable life partner.
  •
  • ‘Anqa - A staple of Arabian folklore the great bird Anqa is said to be a radiant and beautiful being. It has been determined that Anqa is the guardian of the Mount Quaf Portal, defending our realm against malevolent spirits for an eternity. Anqa has been identified as an extremely uniquely coloured Persian Rokh.
  •
  • Dusou - Little is known of Dusou, though they are considered to be highly dangerous. Seemingly preying upon infantile mortal humans, Dusou has cemented themself as a terrifying figure of Scandinavian folklore.
  •
  • Komow - A legendary Thunderbird from Filipino legend, supposedly slain by the hero Sayen. Now ethereal and vengeful Komow is said to still stalk the skies of the Philippines searching for the descendants of the one responsible for their slaying.
