Cassandra
‘The Cave’ departed the Jom System for the Kingdom of Barta. Cassandra knew the star charts as good as most. She didn’t know the exact location of the Golden Reef System, not that it would have been hard for her to figure out, Echo could inform her in a moment, she just didn’t care.
The 10th would make a series of jumps through the Old Ruins, less than a weeks of jumps before they arrived in Barta Space, not that Barta Space, or Bolgar Space for that matter was any better.
Cassandra wondered what it must have been like for her ancestors, and the Furse of old who could travel, and raid throughout Bolgar Space with ease, before the Bolgar nations began to close the gap in light speed tech. Still, even now few Bolgar were a match for a Furse fleet, but they did know how to fight, and fight they did. Nor was it worth raiding the poor Bolgar worlds along the Old Ruins or even further in.
Cassandra moved her training rifle from side to side in the large holo training room, just one of many on ‘The Cave’ that gave the crew of the Star Carrier. Entertainment and non stop training drills at their finger tips.
Cassandra, and Edmund were all that were left. The rest of the retinue was down from enemy fire of their opponents.
“There has to be three of them left,” Cassandra said into her comm system of her held. Her muscles were sore, and voice hard.
“Five,” Edmund corrected her. “You missed on, wounded him though.”
“Can’t be,” Cassandra hissed. “I took two in that last engagement.”
“One,” Edmund said cool and calmly. “The other was hit in the shoulder, and his armor…” a noise stopped Edmund, and they both looked from their cover.
The holo had them in some large estate that neither of them knew. It was an uncommon design, not Furse, maybe Bolgar, but Cassandra couldn’t be sure. None of them were given time to study the layout, and it had cost their Retinue. Second Retinue had gotten the better of them, but that was to be expected from defense.
Edmund looked at Cassandra, and signaled her. She knocked at the commands. Three targets he relayed. Two close, and one further back. She looked at the prince of Fist, even with their Comm system un-hearable and untraceable to the enemy Retinue, neither wanted to speak. It would drown out the sounds of the enemy, and Cassandra should hear the slow steps of power armored feet on broken debris.
“Now,” Edmund said sternly but calmly, and Cassandra moved from her cover and fired her Pulse rifle at the first target she saw. The Guard went down with two quick shots to the chest, but her third missed his head as her rifle moved to the second target, and this time saw the spray from her paint ‘ammo’ slam into her head while the third target began to fire.
Both rounds missed as Edmund dropped the further target, and than she saw him quickly move to their left, and saw the movement of the other two targets coming about. The first one dropped from Edmund’s fire, and the last one fired, and Cassandra watched Edmund drop back as the power armor recoiled from the hit.
Paint ammo sprayed pass Cassandra as she opened up with her rifle on the target, and she dropped to her knee, her weapon firing and narrowing in as her target kept up the pressure as several shots hit the body and traced a line up it’s chest as Cassandra finally connected in an awful display of accuracy, but it proved better than her targets.
“Five,” Edmund said from the ground, his pistol out and aimed at the target.
Cassandra laughed as she realized that the hit had taken Edmund in his shoulder, and he had dropped the last target with a clear shot to the head, and the Holo flickered and ended.
