Matthias

Matthias is an itinerant paladin, a veteran of the Zahari Civil War, and a member of the party. During the sultanate of Kumar XIV, Matthias was an exemplary member of the janissary order. After the sultan's murder, he fought alongside other loyalists like Djoser Senukhef and Bilquis al-Khayat against the forces of the usurper Rashad...first in the captial's burning streets, later in the surrounding slot canyons. But Rashad's forces, led by Basran the Oathbreaker, triumphed. Those few loyalists who survived scattered, and Matthias took up the life of a masterless knight in the desert, doing small acts of valor where ever he could, scrounging for coin as needed. Beneath his tattered cloak, the tarnsihed lion on his armor served as an emblem of the oath he swore in the name of Sherazan. In the outer slums of the city, Matthias befriended Xandu, a conjuration professor banished from the Royal Observatory. He also met Chandra, a fugitive bride escaped from Rashad's harem, and Bohl, a foreign bard who enabled her rescue. At the Twisty Turban, the party learned from Djoser about the whereabouts of Nephotep's Codex and raced to the tomb to acquire it before Rashad.

Back in Zahar, the party penetrated The Royal Observatory and destroyed the book. While escaping the observatory, Matthias faced down the treasonous Jubal el-Jubal, killing him on the library floor with a single smite. Fleeing the city, Matthias and the party reached The Waziri Clan and met Saka. In a remote slot canyon, they comandeered the derelict genie airship The Evening Breeze and escaped the dragon Izmytix. After proving his pure intentions to Armistice at the Island Mausoleum, Matthias and his allies sailed across the Smoldering Divide towards a destination few men have reached: the City of Brass.
