Nephotep's Codex
Nephotep's Codex was a spellbook, authored in pharaonic times by devotees of Horak, the Scarab, believed to contain terrible magical secrets.
The codex may or may not have been authored by the ancient priest Nephotep, but it eventually came to rest in a secret compartment of his tomb...one of hundreds of such monuments buried in the sands of Zahar. In modern times, the Cult of Horak became obsessed with retreiving the book. Rashad compelled dozens of unfortane academics like Tariq ibn-Faraz to comb the royal archives looking for any clue to its whereabouts, and sent expeditions of janissaries into the wilderness to rifle through the ruins. Djoser Senukhef was able to guide the party to Nephotep's tomb hours before one of Rashad's expeditions arrived. They located the book, but were unable to open it, due to the foul lock around the cover, designed to be opened by the spilling of life-blood. Returning to the Twisty Turban, the party found they were unable to destroy the book by ordinary or magical means. The codex was briefly stolen by Dalia ben-Salad in a desperate effort to repay her debt to the cult, but Bohl and Chandra recovered it after a rooftop chase. Xandu formulated a plan to infiltrate the Royal Observatory and use a scroll of disintegration to atomize the object. This plan brought the party face to face with the mad astronomer Goli Ghorbani, but the party was able to attain the scroll and destory Nephotep's codex forever. It is unclear whether Rashad or anyone in the cult realize the book has been pulverized, since Goli, the one witness to its descturction, was killed moments later. Tariq may have some notion of what horrible secrets were contained within its black covers, but its deepest secrets are now lost forever.
