Massacre Gulch

Massacre Gulch is the informal name for a slot canyon in The Western Badlands, about half a day's travel north of Flamingo Springs. It was the site of an battle between Zaharis and genies, the resting place of the derelict airship The Evening Breeze, and the layer of the dragon Izmytix.

Ancient Battle Site

The Battle of Massacre Gulch was one of countless skirmishes of the Genie-Pharaoh Wars. According to the naval logs of Commodore Zefr, a fleet of genie airships from the City of Brass pursued a straggling unit of Zaharis into the narrow valley and straight into an ambush. The genies were magically superior, their geomancers conjuring a mighty earth elemental to aid them. But the pharaoh's troops, led by the undead warlock Captain Sutekh and empowered by the scarab-god Horak, could resurrect endlessly, and they easily overwhelmed the genies. The wreckage of the fleet and the sun-bleached bones of the undead soldiers baked in the sun for thirteen centuries.

Dragon's Lair

At some point in the past five years, when the neglect of the janissaries allowed Izmytix to harrass and extort caravans in the Western Badlands, the young blue dragon selected the stranded wreck of The Evening Breeze as his lair, swiftly amassing a hoard of booty below deck. He disguised the canyon's location from above with illusory magic, and relied on the resonating necromantic and elemental energies from the ancient battle for added defense.   The party, aided by some orcish treasure hunters, discovered the gulch. They slew Captain Sutekh, disabled an earth elemenal, and reanimated The Evening Breeze after a millenium of dormancy. Piloting the ship through the canyons, they narrowly escaped the furious Izymytix, who swore vengeance for the theft of his hoard.
