The Western Badlands
The Western Badlands refers to the sprawling, mazelike expanse of slot canyons west of the River Tahrüq. Modern geographers suggest the land was shaped by Hippolyta's sacred river, in some forgotten epoch when her course ran differently...but today, a drier or less hospitable place could scarcely be imagined. Established caravans like the Waziri will travel days out of their way to avoid crossing this territory.
Like much of the desert, the badlands are scattered with the eroded ruins of ancient Zahari civilization, and many conflicts, such as the battle of Massacre Gulch took place here during the Genie-Pharaoh Wars. Much of the land still radiates with the lingering elemental magic of the genies or the foul necromancy of the scarab-god Horak.
Since Rashad's recalling of the Janissaries at the end of the Zahari Civil War , the Western Badlands are tyrannized by the dragon Izmytix, who extracts heavy tolls of treasure and flesh from those who pass through "his" territory.
