River Tahrüq
The River Tahrüq is the largest source of fresh water in Zahar, making life in the desert possible. Since pharaonic times, it has been considered the sacred domain of the goddess Hippolyta.
The river's source is unclear. Presumably, it originates somewhere in the northern mountains of the genie territories, but this would mean it somehow crosses the Smoldering Divide. In any case, many are reluctant to travel upriver as far as the cursed necropolis of Buz-Horak to discover it.
The river flows southward to the Calm Sea, the estuaries of its delta watering the land around Zahar and many other cities. Some scholars claim that the river once followed a different course, carving out the valleys of the Eastern and Western Badlands, or that Tahrüq was only one of many great rivers in the desert.
Djoser Senukhef guided the party upriver to Nephotep's Tomb. Along the way, they faced a trio of "Hippolyta's Servants," the great river crocodiles.
