The Smoldering Divide
The Smoldering Divide is vast strip of boiling hot sand, seventy-five miles across and more than 200 miles wide, stretching east to west across the desert and forming the northern border of the territories of modern Zahar. Like a fiery gash on the surface of the world, the divide separates the people of Zahar from their ancient rivals, the genies in their distant City of Brass.
Though its origins are misunderstood by the majority of Zaharis, the archangel Armistice revealed to the party the true story of the divide's tragic genesis. When, at the end of the Genie-Pharaoh Wars, the blasphemous priests of Horak crippled his beloved sister and nearly destroyed creation, the lion god Sherazan raked his claws across the desert, forming a sulfurous barrier...so that Genie and Zahari should never again bring themsleves to the brink of anihilation through war. Sherazan ordained Armistice and a pride of lesser angels to watch over this threshold. They made their den at The Island Mausoleum at the divide's edge.
