Crushed Velvet
A very popular boy band in their time, until it was revealed that the songs on their second and third albums were infected with the Ear Worm Virus.
A very popular boy band in their time, until it was revealed that the songs on their second and third albums were infected with the Ear Worm Virus.
From the moment they were first all together, to the tragic ending when four of the five died in an orgy.
On nights when there weren’t many tricks to go around Harley would sing, to entertain passerby, pass the time and even get some trick to chose him. He wrote the songs himself, and used the holographic interface in his forearm tattoo to record music to play as he sang. Eric would have a spot just a few meters away. After a few nights he joined in on the second chorus of Harley’s newest song, and Harley let Eric see the napkin on which he’d written the lyrics. Soon both of their forearm tattoos glowed and when the song was over they had sex.
Harley’s trick for the night, Humphrey Boswell, works for Euterpe Recording Company. He takes Harley to a hotel. After they have sex Harley showers and improvise lyrics for his next duet with Eric Morton. Humphrey hears him and suggests that he should come up to the studio some day. Harley drags the Humphrey back down to his spot and finds Eric there. They perform together and Humphrey gets the idea to create a boy band.
The Executive, Humphrey Boswell, who watched Worley Harper, (or Harley as his name was then,) and Eric Morton perform, went to the CEO of Euterpe Recording Company and pitched putting together a boy band to him. All they needed to do was to find two, or three, more boys.
Within two days they held auditions, for which thousands of boys came to the first round, and then narrowed down the selection. Word of the auditions spread fast, thanks to holographic ads, and also ads in the Dream Program. Many people found it annoying when a random dream character appeared in their shared lucid dream and interrupted their dreamed sex act by telling them about an audition, but almost 90 percent who turned up did so because they saw the dream ad, not the holographic one.
Instead of making thousands of boys come to Sisyphus Prime from planets all over the Coalition, to audition for the boy band, they set up local auditions on every planet and projected them as hologram to the main audition in Aeolus City, for the first round of auditions. Only the ones who got called back for the next round had to go to Aeolus City. Charlie Nash had his first audition in Plouto.
Executives at Euterpe Recording Company talked five boys into forming a boy band, which they named Crushed Velvet. Worley Harper was the first one to be discovered by one executive, Humphrey Boswell. Harley – which was Worley’s original name – introduced Humphrey to Eric Morton and showed the two of them performed well together. Humphrey arranged auditions, through which they found Charlie Nash, Lewis Carter and Elliot Waters and together with Harley and Eric they became Crushed Velvet.
They went into the studio just a few days after the public announcement that the group existed. The main reason it took so long to record was the constant power struggle between the band members, lead by Harley, and their manager, Humphrey Boswell. Harley, Eric and Elliot wanted to record the songs that Harley wrote while Humphrey wanted to record the ones by a freelance songwriter that he’d hired, and Charlie pretended to side with his uncle, Humphrey. Lewis tried to stay out of the drama, but almost every day there would be a moment when Charlie and Lewis disappeared, and fifteen minutes later the bathroom would light up with holographic fireworks and then they would come out and the band would record one of Harley’s songs.
After a short period of mixing the album, Euterpe Recording Company released First Album of Crushed Velvet: Titanomachy at the Summer Solstice Festival that year.
On the same day as the release of the album they crossed the equator to Boulder Island for the annual Winter Solstice Festival concert at the Plaza in the center of the island. Humphrey tried to limit it to the band mouthing along with the recording of the three songs that he bought from an outside songwriter. They got a chilly reception from the audience. Then Harley pulled one of his stunts, revealing an orchestra that played a handful of his songs, which they sung live, and the crowd loved it.
To promote their first album, Titanomachy, Crushed Velvet went on tour throughout The Trident Coalition plus a few sovereign Hellenistic worlds. They performed songs from the album, stayed at hotels, partied and had lots of sex, both with each other and with groupies. Sex between band members often occurred on stage during concerts, especially during one of Harley’s songs, which had sexually explicit lyrics.
The band’s manager, Humphrey Boswell, joined Crushed Velvet on Dionysos for their concert on the stage outside Hotel Silenus. Humphrey claimed it was because the gig there was “such an important part of the tour.” The real reason was so that he could trash the hotel suite and blame it on Harley. He wasn’t very smart about it, since he did it while the band was on stage, so they all had alibis.
The wrap party for the third album of Crushed Velvet soon turned into an orgy between the band members, while consuming alcohol and sniffing poppers. Their manager, Humphrey Boswell, was guilty of putting the Ear Worm Virus on the second and third albums of the band. Hoping to cover his tracks, Humphrey murdered four out of five band members. Worley Harper was supposed to have died too, but survived and was briefly suspected of the murder.
