Telling Deck: Water Deck

Outer Deck

The Water Deck is one of six major, or “Outer,” decks.   Representing the cardinal direction of Vessel, the Water Deck symbolizes themes of Personal Growth and Inward Emotion. As with the element of Vessel, this deck is considered to be symbolically and simultaneously “Wet,” “Covered,” and “Revealed,” or having elements of being internally-focused, but also fluid, seeking, and opening.

Significance

As a structural mechanism, this deck follows the narrative of a hypothetical Tole on a journey to understand the self.
The Voyage begins, taking the Swimmer onto the waves. The Storm arises, causing the ship to sink, and throwing them into the Sea. They are drawn to the whirlpool, and must decide if they will give up and give in to the hypnotic pull, or to stay the course for their original purpose. The Swimmer’s body responds accordingly, and as night breaks, the Swimmer must attempt to find their course. They awaken on the beaches of islands, respite that requires resourcefulness. As they build a raft, the noise attracts the attentions of the islanders, and the Swimmer must decide if they will share knowledge to create a map. The contents of the map guide the Swimmer’s boat through the Narrows of the Island’s Barrier Reefs, using their instincts and the knowledge of the sea they have worked hard to gain. Regardless of their success, they will return to the shore – either of home or of the islands again.
Like the element of Vessel it represents, this deck is considered to be Covered and Revealed : Where you are on this journey is sometimes obscured to yourself, but others can be more aware of it based on your interactions with the world.
