Telling Deck: Wasa’i, The Bear
Inner Deck : Fauna : The Threshold of the Unconscious
Wasa’i, The Bear, is a singular card from the Fauna Deck.
Variances
Wasa'i represents the unconscious, the dream truth, and unintentional thresholds. She is most closely associated with the element of Peak, or Stone. Though not Trued in specific ways as are the Outer Decks, this card is considered by most to represent the influence of the direction of Fern, which governs concepts around the expansion of self.Significance
The Outward face of a card references when a flipped card is shown to be pictorially upright to the Tole. Outward-facing cards engage the Tole’s relationship and interactions to the external world.
When Outward, Wasa’i is the guardian of thresholds: she plants the boundaries that define the gates to dormant powers and fortunes both good and ill. As a symbol of the threshold, Wasa’i informs the Tole that they have come to a threshold of change – usually an unintentional one – and must prepare for this new act. Here, The Bear stands to remind the Tole to pause and review: to gather courage for the course ahead, to ensure a proper start to the journey, to set a proper bearing based on where the Tole wishes to be, and to discard untamed habits that may bring ruin later down the path. Her status and stature commands respect, a reputation she may lend to the Tole should the Tole prove worthy to cross.
The Inward face of a card references when a flipped card is shown to be pictorially upside-down to the Tole. Inward cards engage the Tole’s internal growth, struggles, or subconscious.
When Inward, Wasa’i is the keeper of dreams, her dormant cycles and patient natures allowing her the stamina and stature to defend the thresholds between the dreamt world and the real. The Bear is not afraid to wait for her time to arrive, and her wisdom can be lent to the Tole. Here, Wasa’i communicates the courage to be patient: the value of rest is necessary for survival, and the ability to derive power from the dream truth, even in the face of the real, is necessary for crossing the true challenges. She can stand between the two boundaries with courage and comport, and should the Tole reflect that Stone truth, the Tole too will find themselves able to protect themselves and others with strength and dignity.
