Telling Deck: The Sea

Outer Deck : Vessel : Three

The Sea is the third card within the Outer Deck of Vessel. The Vessel deck revolves around themes of personal growth and inward emotion as they relate to the maturation of the Tole. Within the Outer Decks, the third card deals with concepts of response. Here, within the Vessel deck, this card addresses a willingness to look within to take on the work of growth.

Within the Narrative

The Swimmer is drawn to the whirlpool, and must decide if they will give in to the hypnotic pull, or stay the course for their original purpose.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The Outward face of a card references when a flipped card is shown to be pictorially upright to the Tole. Outward-facing cards engage the Tole’s relationship and interactions to the external world.   When Outward, The Sea card represents cleansing, rejuvenation, and buoyancy even in the midst of strong emotion. Though the waves one feels may be high, the Tole ultimately rises above them, often with little effort. The danger here, of course, is that an unwillingness to dive – to explore the currents pushing the Tole – is also an exhausting use of energy. The experience causing these waves, whether positive or negative in origin, is draining the Tole. Though these storms can’t always be avoided, it is important for the Tole to find ways to replenish themselves in ways other than what they are currently navigating.   The Inward face of a card references when a flipped card is shown to be pictorially upside-down to the Tole. Inward cards engage the Tole’s internal growth, struggles, or subconscious.   When Inward, The Sea card can represent a sense of being overwhelmed, tempest-toss’d by emotional feeling. The Sea card, inward, however, also signifies the power of diving below: that moving beneath the waves – finding a stoic center – might be the best response, and that in order to choose a course, one must search the unconscious for the buried motivations, inclinations, and influences that are moving the Tole. Such actions can steady the Tole and provide valuable insight…assuming, of course, the Tole takes pause for enough breath to support themselves during these dives.
