Personal history
Growing up, Mal’s lullabys were the sound of hammer blows on iron, and his world was lit by the glow of heated metal. He trained as an Blacksmith, like everyone in his family.
However, while the other little Dwarves asked uncle Bor to tell them the tale of Durin Orcsbane or Jak Jotunfeller, Mal begged to hear of High Magister Vul the Avenger, Kem the Earthspeaker, and Tho the Wondersmith. Magic seemed to call to him.
Minor magical talent was said to have run in his family, though none had studied it beyond a few things like the Mending cantrip. A great-great grandfather had copied the Elven wizard Mildthron’s Primer On Magic into Dwarvish, and Mal devoured the book. He was delighted to find he could sense The Weave and had the potential to be a true Wizard. He studied every scrap of magic that he could find. He was disheartened to discover though, that none of it was Dwarven. It was all translated from Human, Elvish, or even Noldoran. Even the Halflings seemed to have a larger magical tradition.
It seemed like the whole of the Dwarven Wizarding community perished with High Magister Vul during his final spell. The masterworks that were being produced seemed to be somehow less than they were, now that Mal understood they were mere imitations of the enchanted wonders produced in the ancient The Hall of Magic.
Clan Ironstone's histories began with the landing at Tolpereth. Mal used his extensive family to look into the histories of some of the other clans and found the same situation In the others, there were stories of the items and spells, and stories of the people who made and cast them, but no actual details of the casting or forging were recorded in any of the great clan records.
Mal resolved to rediscover or even reinvent these techniques, so that his people can once again have their heritage and the pieces produced by his Clan will no longer be the shadows of things of yore.
Realizing he has exhausted all the resources available to him for magic in the Dwarven settlements, Mal has set forth towards human lands to connect with their magical community in search of better spell books and like minded beings with which to better his magic.
He was awarded membership in the Order of the Knight Companions in 1251 for services rendered to the High King of Tolpereth.

Family Ties
Father Tyln Dor-Nae
Mother Thymu Dor-Nae, formerly Axshaper
Brothers: Moyld, Yryn, and Myene
Myene the eldest brother is married to Myrn formerly of Clan Cliffcarver. Together they have Mal’s baby nephew Bem and toddler niece Mydra.
Mal’s great uncle Kor Dornae is current Jarl of the Clan.
Being the oldest and wealthiest Sept of one of the oldest and wealthiest Clans in Tolpereth, almost all of Mal’s uncles and great uncles married (unusual for Dwarves). They also all had typically large families. As a result, Mal gave up even trying to remember the names of all his cousins. There are just too many to keep up with. Grog Greathammer of Clan Battlehammer is one of Mal’s many, many cousins- proof that there is one in every family.
