Delaera

"It would be cruel to have these citizens have to change their mailing addresses. I'm sure we can make this name work."
— Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Galactic

Demographics

Delaera is mostly populated with the highly educated, descended from individuals from all corners of the world. Most of the people have lived there for generations.

Government

Despite being owned by a corporation, the civil issues are handled by an elected council of the local citizens. The Board of Directors from Virgin Galactic do occasionally intervene, but not often.

Defences

Part of Delaera's built in defense plan is how it is surrounded by desert, not easily traversed by foot. The flat open land is also a boon to their surveillance systems, which includes drones on the ground and in the air as well as complex observation systems including cameras and infrared sensors. There is also a human security staff that monitors all of these systems and their findings, and only intervene when necessary. Usually these teams are the ones that decide when to deploy the turrets and barricades.

Industry & Trade

A lot of communication technology is constructed in these borders, which serves as the primary international trade for Delaera. With their outer space station having been operating with decades, they also trade for research data with other countries and universities. They also maintain the Virgin Mobile network from here, which still serves internationally.

Infrastructure

The technical achievements are apparent with the way that the roads double as solar panels, the wind farms are relatively quiet, and the residential housing is completely sustainable with the least offensive human fertilizer system known on the planet.

Assets

Delaera not only own patents to multiple scientific achievements and improvements, but is the headquarters for the first private space center, located just outside the orbit of the Earth.

Guilds and Factions

The Delaera Apprentices has been around since 2083, and has been an initiative to invite some of the world's best and brightest to be employees and citizens within Delaera. There is a bit of a prestige factor for those who have completed the program, particularly within the walls of Delaera.

History

Elon Musk was one of the many financial contributors to the campaign of the president who enacted the Executive Order of 2022. As soon as it passed, he tried to establish his companies as their own countries, feeling this would help aid his goals not only as a entrepreneur but as a contributor to the global community. He thought the government of California would see it his way. However, he and many Silicon Valley elite were surprised of the push back of the government and the citizens of the state, who mostly did not want to allow any corporate entity to have dominion over the land.
Sharing his frustration with the public, Musk looked to land away from the Pacific coast, and found political allies around the county of Elko, Nevada. After some negotiations and significant land purchases, Musk finally announced his hundreds of acres as a independent nation. Wanting to mark how this nation was of the era, Musk named it Delaera. Many critics were happy to point out his misuse of French. Musk claimed he paid them no mind, for a name was outside of the needs of grammar and spelling and "regular language". Looking back, some believe this is the beginning of the downfall.
Employees of Tesla, Space X, and Musk's other companies were required to move and live on Delaera as housing ans services were provided. First wave was most of the civic labor force with a few executive members, then the middle management and specialized employees, along with factory workers and even the sale leads. Despite this wave of moves in the year, these companies were experiencing a loss in profit due in part with being associated with Musk. Although having regained his good reputation with the public after his tough year in 2018, Musk was along another downward spiral thanks in part to the move. Californians started a smear campaign against his character, and the ECFB (the earlier name for the The Fighters of Greed) piggy-backed with attacks on investor's homes. Some investors did sell their share of the companies and Delaera. Others just dropped out entirely. This reduced cashflow hurt Musk's bottom line after the expensive move, and he blamed the ECFB frequently when interviewed or posting on social media.
In 2028, it came out that a lot of the staff were leaving Delaera as well. Some had been offered better deals of work at other corporate nations, but most had just felt that they were being underpaid, even with the free housing, utilities and groceries on top of no taxes out of their income. Later on, a former accountant who had worked for Musk when establishing Delaera agreed with the employees that left. Even with the benefits and the top of the line civic services, the pay that citizens received was too low to cover any health needs, additional schooling, even incidental luxuries such as fast food and cosmetics. Musk had been advised to hire an economists, but thought he had a better idea of how things should be tiered. The need to replace all the labor was slowing down production and costing Delaera money.
In November of 2028, Virgin Galactic went to Musk and offered a price not for all his companies, but for Space X and all of Delaera. It would be enough money for Musk to continue his other business pursuits elsewhere in the United States if he wished. By January 2029, Musk announced the transfer to Delaerans, and retreated to Montana.
Sir Richard Branson, still running the Virgin Group, spent his last years establish what he referred to as the "brand of a new era". Delaera would continue to be a contributor to the global community but on a grander scale. Since all of the other projects by Virgin were successful on a product front, Branson instead wanted Delaera a place where smart people can fail until they succeed. Keeping pay extremely competitive and implementing a capital renewal cycle that would be implemented every eight years, the Virgin Group converted all of the facilities to either produce their electronic products or to specifically benefit Virgin Galactic. During this time, they either let current Delaerans keep their current jobs at a higher pay rate, or gave them a generous base wage until they found a new job for them. The latter was resolved rather quickly. They also tried to invest in the community with actual engaging structures or programs--a nondenominational chapel, a couple parks, a whole Spring festival during the weekend. These investments actually endeared Delaera's new owners to the public, and their business grew even more, making completion of the investment that much more obtainable.
By 2045, Delaera began on their far reaching research satellites, announcing that having more countries investigating the mysteries of space couldn't be a bad thing for the public. That was only the beginning of their achievements, and over time became a powerhouse of technological progress. They continued to invent new systems and devices in defense, surveillance, transportation, and communication. As automation took over most of their production, any citizens that were descended from original Delaeran emigrants were allowed a comfortable income as long as they committed no crimes against Delaera.
As of late, Virgin Galactic has maintained a research center outside of Earth's orbital pull for the last 28 years, sharing it's data and observations. They also are one of the leading producers of camera-based drones for personal and commercial use, and have a deal with General Motors to provide the communication systems for their vehicles.

Architecture

Bright blue buildings that seemingly interlock and climb over each other make up the majority of the buildings, including the residential areas. The majority of Delarea's structures are circular with courtyards in the center. Some odd structures with unique architecture are interspersed near the borders of the country.
