Cargill West

"Why would abandon us like that! We've been nothing but loyal to them!"
— Betty Childs, former Cargill employee residing in Cargill West.

Demographics

Uncertain. Due to the land being mostly abandoned by Cargill, the majority of the population are people of either no means or of criminal enterprises.

Government

Cargill mostly governs the border, using a militia team with bunkers, drones, and some surveillance. However this is mostly to appease other countries, as the interior is mostly abandoned.

Defences

The roads in and out of Cargill West are well guarded with bunkers holding 4 to 12 heavily armored militia men, with each base having at least one armored vehicle and a few drones. These defenses are mainly focused on entry and exit of the borders.

Industry & Trade

No official industry and trade is on hand. The profit of the rest of the company is what pays for it's current militia set up.

Infrastructure

The previous beef production and grain farms have either been completely abandoned or taken over by one form of squatter or another. Whatever systems of civilization that have previously existed are barely maintained (if at all) by Cargill.

Assets

What little Cargill owns is all for military use , mostly located around the roads that border the corporate nation.
For all the illicit or independent activities happening within Cargill West, it's almost anyone's guess what could be of any value.

History

Cargill, wanting to lower the cost of their beef production, took a look at the areas where their meat plants were close to beef farms, and decided on four areas. Ottumwa, Iowa was selected as a potential contender early on, but delays from state legislators resulted in the sovereignty not being finalized until September of 2023. Immediately Cargill invested on making the whole land a haven for any employee of their farming and meat production plant. The previous government services of Ottumwa were somewhat reduced but still maintained.
As it was with its predecessors Cargill North and Cargill South, all the employees received free housing, schooling, and other social services. Many people in the surrounding areas moved to accept jobs at Cargill's beef production, whether is was on the farming end, the processing plant end or even aiding distribution. Others who were disgusted with how quickly Iowa let go of the city of Ottumwa left as soon as they can to be U.S. citizens elsewhere, but they appeared to be in the minority. Cargill West was a successful small nation full of happy citizens for some time.
Around 2058, it was becoming clear that lab grown meat production was going to take over traditional beef production, and Cargill wanted to cut their losses early. Cargill East, West and North all had several years of falling profits, and a losing distirbution contracts at an alarming rate. With that Cargill decided to prioritize profit over their citizens. On January 1st, 2062, Cargill announced that all of the production plants, farms and distribution centers in Cargill West would close immediately. Citizens, losing their livelihoods that many had held their entire adult lives, began to riot. Many tried to steal anything they could from the property of Cargill. Within a day, mercenary forces were hired to quell the violence, but the Cargillians just proceeded to run. Most who were captured by the mercenaries were merely arrested and held as Cargill decided what to do with them. Some who fought back were killed. Cargill was able to keep the deaths hush for a decade before an investigator revealed their trail for hush money to one particular family. Cargill learned many lessons from Cargill West.
For a while, Cargill abandoned the land. The majority of the former citizens attempted to become citizens of the United states, many of them for the first time. Others tried to find jobs at the other remaining Cargill nations. A small few found advantage in coming from a lawless land with no traceable background. The remaining cattle were either sold off or transfered to other Cargill nations. The same was true to much of the beef production equipment. Things seemed a sorrowful quiet when most looked onto the failed nation.
Then in 2081, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation linked an illegal arms group to an abandoned farm on Cargill West. The US began a reputation based attack on Cargill, claiming them to have forfeit their lands. Despite no longer wanting to maintain the whole nation anymore, Cargill thought that selling the nation to another entity would be profitable in the future. With a strange mix of diplomacy and marketing, Cargill took half the decade to convince the rest of North America that Cargill West was to be watched and maintained. That year is when their formalized their militia for all four of their nations. On all the former Ottumwa roadways, tanks, militia men and drones keep watch.
There are still stories of Cargill West being home to criminal activity. Cargill claims there's not much more they can do but patrol the best they can. The United Nations have condemned Cargill's practices with their nation abandonment. However, no boycott or public outcry has seemed to stick, as Cargill invests with multiple companies as well as works under a multitude of names.

Architecture

The are some of the old buildings of Ottumwa, as well as the square, white gray homes that are a trademark of Cargill nations. They have all been in disrepair for a century.

Natural Resources

Rumor has it that there is still some potentially profitable areas of clay in Cargill West.
