Cargill East

"We are doing our best to keep our citizens employed for as long as we can afford."
— Announcement to Cargillians, February of 2070.

Demographics

The majority of the population are working class Caucasians, descended from the original population of what was formerly Wyalusing, Pennsylvania.

Government

On paper, Cargill runs the nation, and guards road entrances and some of its meat processing facilities with drones and mercenaries.
In actuality, there is a strange mix of Cargill employees and the descendants of former employees that maintain the area in spite of Cargill's minimal support.

Defences

Most of the entryways are guarded with small barracks, with about four to ten human guards assisted by drones and other defense tech. It's typical to see patrols of four people with a drone or two checking around the roadways at day and night.

Infrastructure

Minimal upkeep of roadways and utilities is provided by Cargill, and some Cargillians help with the finer details of maintaining these systems.

Assets

Cargill East maintains a 33 acre beef ranch with nearby beef-product plant. There is also a well maintained militia guarding the entire area

History

Cargill, wanting to lower the cost of their beef production, took a look at the areas where their meat plants were close to beef farms, and decided on four areas. Wyalusing, Pennsylvania was a front runner early on. It took Cargill an extensive amount of time to be able and convince the local politicians to sell them all the area in Wyalusing without revealing it to the public. The deal was finalized January 10th, 2024.
Offering free housing and services for those residing in the country, the population of Cargill East doubled in six months as Cargill expanded its beef production. Early on the community formed around a group of people looking for a second chance. One of the closest nations to the Northeast, a region that formed no corporate nations after the Executive Order of 2022, there were a number of people who came looking to escape a past that had stuck to them as American citizens. Cargill ended up hiring reformed criminals, provided they had gone a decade without being charged with another crime. The established locals were wary of these changes, but Cargill made sure that of all their nations, Cargill East has the best surveillance.
As the decades went on, the culture in Cargill turned from one from suspicion, to one of helpfulness. Although the cause of this change has been lost to history, what had once inspired Cargillians to look at each other with distrust evolved into a neighborly culture. Militias would be able to maintain order by appealing to citizen's humanity. Cargillians would be willing to help out their bosses and employees because they saw each other as part of a bigger community. Productivity was high, even as Cargill's traditional meat sales began to drop.
By 2058, Cargill could tell that all of their nations were producing less overall. Cargill East received a boost in 2062 to production and profit when it was decided to reduce production in Cargill West. This boost was minimal considering it was the smallest of the remaining of the three nations. The Cargillians could tell over the next decade that there was less work to do, as lab grown meat began to grow in popularity. There were fears that their idyllic community was a temporary experiment.
In 2070 Cargill revealed to both Cargill North and Cargill East that all previous retirement plans would no longer be invested in, and that there would be no longer any more job openings. As people would quit, they would not be replaced. They also discontinued their raise plans at the time. They had hoped that this would encourage these citizens to find jobs elsewhere. Yet the Cargillians in the East did not trust that leaving their country would benefit them. Although a few did end up leaving to try and find gainful employment anywhere, many pooled their resource and decided to keep the small town alive.
As the jobs diminished and Cargill invested less in the nation, a community of Cargillians developed their own communal systems. Some bought the livestock that was being sold in order to make a small farm. Other established trade with local U.S. towns and other corporate nations in exchange for small tasks and labor. Those who still worked at Cargill would contribute funds in order to help with repairs and trade. Cargill wasn't going to stop the community after the disaster with Cargill West, so there is an understanding that these independent citizens are allowed to stay as long as they bring in now scrutiny or trouble.

Architecture

Some of the original buildings of Wyalusing were repurposed for Cargill, and are maintained. There is also the main living area with white buildings, some with connection to 22nd century upgrades while others have been maintained by skilled labor. Premanufactured square farm houses litter the fields as necessary.
