Cargill North

"We would like to thank all the support from the people of Wisconsin to help make this dream a reality."
Press Release from Cargill, sent out May 16, 2023.

Demographics

It's hard to know for certain the exact demographics since Cargill stopped keeping stats for Cargill North since 2120, but it's assumed that no one of good means lives in the nation.

Government

On paper, Cargill runs the nation, and guards road entrances and some of its meat processing facilities with drones and mercenaries.
However, significant pockets of the land can be better describes as run with vigilante justice.

Defences

Most of the entryways are guarded with small barracks, with about four to ten human guards assisted by drones and other defense tech. There are a few a tanks that sometimes patrol and weed out any "riff-raff" in the large unoccupied areas.

Industry & Trade

Cargill's beef cattle operation is the largest money making venture in Cargill North, even though it is less that a quarter of its former strength. There are rumors of black market trade and exchanges in the confines of Cargill's land. Only those with seedy connections can verify what kind of illegal trade is happening.

Infrastructure

Only a few of the original roadways are maintained with minimal asphalt, same with just one water tower and the sewer systems. This area is near the eastern borders. The western areas, closer to Madison, are not as well maintained by Cargill. Most of any structure or system in the middle or western parts of the country are either in complete disrepair or poorly maintained by citizen who have little to no means.

Assets

Cargill's remaining beef operation in the area is about 45 acres of land with a meat processing plant. There are also Cargill militia stores scattered throughout the land as well, mostly with guns, armor, and other small defense items.

History

Cargill, wanting to lower the cost of their beef production, took a look at the areas where their meat plants were close to beef farms, and decided on four areas. The north part of the land in between Milwaukee and Madison seemed to be ripe for the taking, and plenty of the Wisconsin politicians felt this sale of land would be best for the citizenry. Although the deal was finalized earlier in 2023, Cargill did not confirm the formation of Cargill North until mid-May.
Offering free housing and services for those residing in the country, Cargill was able to bring in citizens easily. In fact many previously illegal immigrants to the U.S. who had worked in the beef industry before signed up to become citizens of Cargill. For the first two decades of its existence, Cargill North was a shining example of what a corporate nation could be. Services and community perks were maintained at a decent level. Annual seasonal fairs were celebrated and even became local tourist attractions.
By 2058, Cargill could tell that all of their nations were producing less overall. Cargill North received a boost in 2062 to production and profit when it was decided to reduce production in Cargill West. Some Cargillians from the West tried to obtain jobs in the country, but few were able to take advantage of the small amount of openings. However, at the end of the decade Cargill North had produced at too much of a deficit. Plans to maintain many of the buildings and other community services began to fade.
In 2070 Cargill revealed to both Cargill North and Cargill East that all previous retirement plans would no longer be invested in, and that there would be no longer any more job openings. As people would quit, they would not be replaced. They also discontinued their raise plans at the time. They had hoped that this would encourage these citizens to find jobs elsewhere. They had, unfortunately, help create a generation of people who had learned skills to a dying industry. Lab-grown meat had made future career prospects for most Cargillians obsolete. Many stayed around the abandoned farmland, some seemingly working for free as positions and support for their dying communities.
Within a generation, some decided to take their chances to immigrate out of Cargill North. Others decided to stay put and revel in the wild west nature, stating that Cargill was not the true source of their happiness. A few decided too take advantage of the lack of surveillance and began illegal enterprises. Cargill, not wanting to ruin relationships with Milwaukee or Madison, started minimal militia runs and raids, offering only a few jobs to those who had stayed behind.
By 2120, the beef production was reduced to a staff of merely 325 despite still having a population of around 5,000 staying in the land. Since then, the population has continued to decrease, but not without some resistance. It is rumored that people seeking to escape their previous lives, or start an isolated existence, seek out abandoned areas of Cargill North or Cargill East.

Architecture

Anything that was formerly a Cargill building was a simply built wood housing. On the eastern part of Cargill the square, white gray homes are maintained, now with solar panel and green ceilings. Throughout the rest of Cargill North's abandoned lands, these houses have been eaten down by the elements, if they haven't been amateurishly repaired and maintained. Some of the other buildings, that were established in the towns before Cargil's purchased, still stand in the small city centers, although most are in serious disrepair.
The farmlands, former or current, all have large square store houses and barns for the cattle. They're all mostly gray, and obviously pre-manufactured buildings.
