Chapter Seven: Arbitration

General Summary

At 6:14 am on January 29th, 2162, the Discontents, aware of how fraught their expatriation would be, pulled into the Las Vegas station of the North American United High Speed Rail. Emily Asbury led them and Pete Deyes through the flashing signs and whirling slot machines to where the Virgin Galactic provided bus with concierge was waiting for them. At that point, Emily let James know that there was an extra translator on the bus so that one of the mandarin speakers could have one. James handed it off to Wei.
During the ride, as the sun came up across the desert, Pete took Wei aside and confided with him about the worries that had plagued him through the train ride: he had found out his son had run away. Wei tried to comfort Pete, and listened to his new friend worry and fret.
Meanwhile, James and Sebastian were still terribly paranoid about the attempted poisoning by Ria Fan on the NAUHSR. After conferring a bit, Sebastian sat in a spot on the bus that granted him the most visibility of the road, to make sure there were no vehicles following them on the mostly empty highway. James decided to ask Raymond what he knew about their future arbiters, Neutral Party, Incorporated. Raymond spoke on how The Truth Machine leaked an enemies list from the government of Fuyao Beimei and that the Neutral Party was on it, as well as the whole state of California and an offshore island company floating in the Atlantic. James listened politely but considered his source.
Soon enough the group had arrived to their lodgings during the investigation, an art-deco inspired symmetrical mansion surrounding with local cacti and grass on grounds. At the doors they were all greeted with two of the Virgin Galactic armed guards on the property. Wei said goodbye to Pete before leaving the bus and wished him luck.
At this point everyone was finally granted a translator to use during their stay, and Emily let them know they could contact Delaera personal if they needed anything else. During the rest of their day each didn't truly relax. Scoot, who had stayed particularly quiet throughout the whole time, went on the computer seemingly focused on his task. Wei did so as well to see what he could learn briefly about Pete's son Winston. James sent a message to Lily Bjorklund, while Raymond attempted to encrypt a message to the Truth Machine. After which Raymond, unable to read the labels on the liquor offered in the house, discovered his distaste for coconut rum. He still drank it anyway.
After a night of rest in comfortable bed but uncomfortable worries, the investigation by the Neutral Party started at 9am. Agent N12 and Agent Z4, two stone faced Arbitration Agents complete with matching black newsboy caps, arranged a long table in the foyer of the mansion to sit all five of the discontents across from them. Plainly and directly, they asked for the groups recollection of what transpired. To the best of their ability, everyone except Scoot contributed to an understanding of what had just transpired two days prior. After about thirty minutes of note taking and simple questions, it was time for the agents to do individual interviews first, starting with Scoot, then Wei, James, and Raymond in one of the bedrooms on the upstairs level, where they used noise cancellation technology to keep the conversations private.
As the other four waited for Sebastian to be finished with the agents, Pete came into the mansion looking wide-eyed with worry. He asked Wei for help retrieving his son Winston from Nature's Samsara, a cult in Elko mountain. Winston was not to be retrieved by Delaera since he was not a citizen officially. Despite being a citizen of the United States, they were cautious of interfering with the commune that the cult stayed on, knowing it to be a sovereign nation established over a century ago. Pete felt that the group could help, and Wei felt obligated. However James pointed out they could too start an international incident if they were not careful, and it may be best for them to stay put. Pete went to walk, promising to be back in an hour to hear their decision. James, Wei, Raymond and Scoot spoke about their options at 4:27pm, January 30th, 2162.
