White Whale Sound
Far to the northwest of Tarien the shoreline of the Nerrid Peninsula cuts inward forming a natural sound that, unlike much of the shoreline further north, remains ice free all winter. With little bordering the sound other than the firs and spruces of the Schemka Forests and the distinct lack of trading vessels that brave the trip around the Peninsula and in the Great North Sea, few have witnessed the conflagration of white skinned whales that grant the sound its name. Drawn every summer by the proliferation of the green sea slime that grows on the water under the light of long days, these ghost-like whales meet in the thousands to feed, socialize, and breed. Nerrid scholars who have conducted studies on the creatures have described them a "socsocially and environmentally conscious". And while "incapable of higher mathematics and other signs of civilization" they are nonetheless "excellent conversationalists" though prone to more gossip than their larger cousins found in the seas further north.
