Pole Town

Located just past the Mud Gate on the eastern walls of Pendril, Pole Town gets its name from the stilts upon which many of the wooden and thatch roofed buildings stand. Even those buildings with more permanent stone foundations have raised their first levels a pace above the silt and muck that floods regularly when the Pendril River rises after a big storm. Its unpaved streets, of course, have no such advantage, meaning that residents and visitors regularly have to trek through a handspan's or more of mud as they go about their business.

And business is the heart and soul of Pole Town. As the district sits just past the city's obsidian walls, it also sits just beyond the jurisdiction of the Five Masked Lords and their Incontrovertible Edicts, a fact that has pushed the seedier elements of the city that might naturally gather around docs wholly into the district. While certainly not as lawless as Sarnyan, the Freelancers do take a heavy hand in day-to-day life. They run a number of brothels, gambling houses, and other taverns, providing outlets for vice not otherwise found in the city. They dip their fingers into the protection rackets and smuggling, as well, though most are careful to avoid breaking any of the edicts as history has shown that while crimes committed outside the city walls may not be prosecuted, they seem to be taken into account should a perpetrator ever venture into the city proper and suffer a judgement.
