Mud Gate

Located at the exact eastern apex of the smooth black walls that encircle Pendril, the Mud Gate leads out of the city proper to Pole Town, the somewhat ramshackle district alongside the River and outside the jurisdiction of the Incontrovertible Edicts. That line - between the four tenets of basic human (and demi-human) decency and the chaos of freedom has been clearly defined over the years. Pick pockets from the docks have suffered immediate Judgements as they fled through the gate with their ill-gotten coins and sailors involved in a ruckus shoved into the city have found themselves exiled instantly, sometimes beyond the Lawless Gate and sometimes back into the fray.

This sudden enforcement of the rule of law makes the gate a sharp dividing point. Merchants and other law-abiding travelers move through freely, though most prefer the city side as those of disreputable nature hang around the eastern side of the gate, waiting to prey on the unwary. Even the ground itself seems to feel the division with the city of Pendril's well-worn cobblestone streets giving way to the clay soil of Poletown. Invariably slick and muddy from the river, it is this division that gives the gate its name.
