Phezrim Forests

Northeast of the Malpighien Steppes, tucked along the western foothills of the Rheuthengage Mountains are the cedars, firs, hemlocks, and pines of the Phezrim Forests. Named for Colonel Phezi, Zennonaize warlord that reputedly first settled the village of Paaz nearly a millennia ago, the forest once reached clear to the shores of the Wartin Gulf. Despite shrinking over the past thousand years, cut pack to make room from the castles and growing herds of the expanding Confederacy, it still covers a vast expanse of land. Running as many as 50 leagues east to west and over 300 from the southwest to its northeastern edge, the forest is still home to towering trees with trunks as wide across as arm spans of five men.

In the broad spaces beneath these branches a wide variety of animals live out their lives rarely, if ever, encountering man. From the smallest birds, squirrels, and toads to the mightiest deer, bear, and striped hunting cats, the forests hold Chetria's own menagerie. And while rumors of ogres and other monsters float amongst the trappers and loggers that call Paaz home, one would be hard pressed to find someone who has actually seen such a monster in the forest. All agree, however, that something strange does indeed dance beneath Verdun's light, especially when she is full. The strange lights that can occasionally be seen from as far away as the village's edge seem to float, leaping erratically before blinking rappidly in and out of existance. No one has, of course, investigated them as they seem to cease as quickly as they begin.
