Palace of the Winter Queen

Made of blue-ice and shrouded in the gloom of an eternal winter evening, snow falling delicately in the starlight, the Palace is home to Mayve Snowbound, the dread Queen of Ice and Snow. Reputedly filled with magic beyond the understanding of even the most proficient mortal magi, the palaces rests within outer walls of sheer ice, climbing to over twenty feet in height and cornered by thirty foot towers that are topped with slender spires that curve in a helix reaching that height again into the night sky before ending in an impossibly thin point. Within the keep itself rests the palace proper - a three story, roughly square structure, its icy walls windowless and shimmering in the starlight. Looking at the palace from afar one can clearly see a half dozen snowy pines growing from its roof, artfully arranged in a too perfect natural glade.

The lands surrounding the the palace are perpetually smooth sheets of ice, stretching several hundred feet before ending in the gently climbing slope of an evergreen forest. The slope continues up some two or three hundred feet creating a valley in which the palace rests, a thin bank of fog perpetually hovering just above the ridges surrounding it. Those few that have seen the valley describe the air as thick and heavy, full of a deep melancholy that pushed sorrow into their very bones.

Unusually, the palace has reputedly been seen in dozens of locations across northern Tarien over centuries. Tales of woodsmen, merchants, and other hapless travelers stumbling upon the palace deep in the Rheuthengage Mountains, after coming around a bend in a hunting trail in the Soulmeliti Forests, or even among the ridges and valleys of the Orkish Hills deep within the abound. Scholars have been astounded at the similarities given in accounts by visitors to the palace, despite the fact that they often need to be picked out of the mad ravings that are all the only words such visitors invariably end up uttering. Its last sighting was just north of the Moosewood by a tribe of nomads that encountered the palace while following the caribou herds of the great northern tundra.
