Anton Malakar

Found of the Republican Army

Like so many that have emigrated from civilized parts of Tarien to Azermathia, Anton was the younger son of a minor lord. His father had paid for both a fine education and commission into the Imperial Legion and considered his duty to his son fulfilled. Anton went on to have a fine, though unremarkable career, attending the War College of Gartcha and serving in posts along the Trans-Rheuthengage Highway in Galencia, Grennig, and along the Prydith Peninsula. His superiors found him a fine administrator and passable tactician, though they saw little action, finding that they seemed to rotate out of various assignments just before imperial hot spots erupted. Whether this meant that the General's diplomacy kept whatever flames were present from exploding or that his inaction caused them to flare up after his departure was a matter of some debate in Karradone that, after the serries of conflicts with a local Wemic tribe after his legion's departure from Kransworth lead to his dismissal from the legion.

Shortly thereafter, retired to the Hinterlands, taking up residence in Gryphon's Crossing with the intent to become a gentleman farmer. Anton was quickly disabused of the notion of a life of agrarian leisure in the wilds of Azemathia. After two winters of back breaking labor with little show for it beyond a few half-feral horses and a crop of slightly moldy sweet potatoes, he was almost relieved to draw his sword in defense of his home during a Goblin raid. His Imperial training made him both the ablest fighter and sharpest military mind in the fledgling nation so that the Kyushu Horde invaded the following summer, the local militia immediately turned to him for leadership.

Using Gunther's Riders as light cavalry to lead the savagely mounted Kyushu into a mountain pass, Anton ambushed the Horde with a mob of farmers. Armed with spears and hastily crafted spears, the lightly trained militia employed basic shield wall tactics to inflict terrible losses on the Kyushu. Somewhat surprised at the valor of the Hinterland settlers, Anton's force drove the Kyushu back over the pass and out of the Hinterlands.

After the invasion, Anton led efforts with other land owners to fund both a standing army and to construct a fort near Grypon's Crossing. He then lead the tiny army for a half dozen years before retiring a second time, this time with the intent of opening a vineyard in Haverston. He died less than a year later.
